My sense is that Gen. Scowcroft has a personal axe to grind with Ariel Sharon that dates from the Israeli invasion of Lebanon. If you'll recall that invasion began a string of events that lead to Reagan sending in the Marines. Those were some tough times in DC after the downing of some Navy pilots (remember the Jesse Jackson mission?), the Sabra & Shatilla "massacre" (by Lebanese militiamen, but blamed on Israel) & the Marine Barracks bombing.
Of course, this bleating by Gen. Scowcroft will only serve to comfort the Kerry campaign and give them some free ammo for a news cycle, or two. I'm sure that Ariel Sharon could give a hoot what Scowcroft thinks today.
