West Palm Beach, FL, Oct. 16 (UPI) -- President George W. Bush signed legislation Saturday requiring the State Department to monitor anti-Semitism around the world, the White House said.
The Global Anti-Semitism Awareness Act was sponsored by California Democratic Representative Tom Lantos, a Holocaust survivor.
Under the legislation the State Department would be required to form a special office to monitor anti-Semitism, produce an annual report on anti-Semitism, rate countries annually on the treatment of Jews and make recommendations for action to correct anti-Semitism practices.

Bet Foggy Bottom's just gonna love this.
Ping!
The headline got me wondering if someone tried to claim that putting up a Bush lawn sign was an anti-Semitism act. :o)
It's sad to know that the bill was needed, but I understand why it was passed.
I often hear the same sentiment about the Voting Rights Act, Patriot Act, Civil Rights Act, Clean Air Act, Social Security Act, and Meicare Act.
Why is it "needed"???
Do we also "need" special offices within the State Department to protect Catholics? Italians? African-Americans? Native-Americans? Evangelical Christians? Hispanics? Gays?
What makes one demographic group so doggone important that they "need" a special State Department Office that other groups don't have?
Put some of the worse offenders working in our State Department in the special office, under a boss motivated to shoot down any unacceptable work they try to turn in.
Native Americans are handled by a different department of our government (Interior) & have been for ages. You ever hear of the Bureau of Indian Affairs?
The way things are going in some countries for some Christian minorities, adding a department to monitor them might not be a bad idea.
And, what are the unforseen consequences for this act?
Has Bush so easily forgotten the precedent set by the Civil Rights Act, which had one stated purpose, that snowballed into differing factions wanting their own special "rights"?
How many "Special Offices" will the State Dept. have in ten years time to monitor anti-gays, anti-women, anti-muslim, anti-anything?
The same could be said of intolerance of ANY cultural minority.
Why single out one group for special protection and ignore all the other perpetual victims?
"Why single out one group for special protection and ignore all the other perpetual victims?"
Uh, cause they're pandering for votes?
It's truly sad when so-called conservatives have to play by the liberal's rules to even the game...
