Clemenceau was a grand old rogue, though; one of my favorite quotes of his is "God gave us ten commandments; we broke them. Mr. Wilson has given us fourteen points; we shall see."
My other favorite Clemenceauism is: "Military justice is to justice as military music is to music." Zot! Not an especially nice man, but a deft touch with le mot juste.
