The waning of the power and status of the intelligentsia is hardly exclusive to France and Britain. Yet it is an alarming trend for countries that once boasted imperial and military might and now rely on the 'soft power' of their culture and brains...Intellectuals were all the rage fifty years ago, foisted on the country by JFKI, among others, who read poems by Robert Frost at his inauguration and invited Pablo Casals to the White House to play his cello - now people are coming to understand just how corrupt and foolish these paragons of reason and mental gymnastics really are - as Orwell said "you'd have to be an intellectual to believe such a thing - no ordinary man could be so foolish".....
