Now I feel bad saying that Molly Ivins looked like Ernest Borgnine in a wig a couple of days ago.
Sorry Chief. You're a lot better looking.

Yep. Just thinking about this stuff takes me back... and puts a grin on my old mug.

Yep. There's a picture of old Molly in the encyclopedia on the entry for 'painfully ugly'. Ernie always looked like a guy who could kick butt and take names. I remember a girlfriend remarking about how he was "built" while watching some movie -- maybe "The Poseidon Adventure" or whatever it was.

Funny you mention Combat. I'd toss in "12 O'Clock High".
We really have grown away from having any WWII shows on TV. Kids grow up in a vacuum, without any idea these events ever happened.

I love Enrie too, but he isn't/wasn't always lovable...
Tough monkey. Guys like you end up in the stockade sooner or later. Someday you'll walk in. I'll be waitin'. I'll show you a couple of things.

My father who served 44 months in the Pacific loved that show. One of the things we did together was watch McHale's Navy and the Victory At Sea series.

I for one hated "Mchale's Navy". First in a long line of shows to portray officers as bumbling fools, while the enlisted were shown to be smarter and more brave. Has to be the most worn wartime movie cliche.

Saw him briefly at a motel in Poughkeepsie, NY, in the fall of 1981, about the same time that there was some finishing up in the filming of Robin Williams in *The World According to Garp.*
Mr. Borgnine, as I recall, was very friendly to everybody. He was also built like iron, which may account for his incredible endurance.
It was much later that I read up on his background, and how, well, he's been through a lot that would make you tough.
This same time frame, is when I was using that machine shop in the area, that had all the IBM prototypes.

Normally, I refer to him as John F'n Kerry and his wife Mother F'er Theresa. One of the local talkers refers to him as Jean-Francois, and it seemed appropriate here for some unknown reason.

My favorite Borgnine movie would be "Emperor of the North", with Lee Marvin.
