A colorful mosaic gracing the entrance of Livermore's new library has 11 of the 175 names and words on the piece misspelled -- from "Eistein" and "Shakespere" to "Van Gough" and "Michaelangelo."
The $40,000 project now will cost the city a few thousand more because it must pay the artist to fly from her Miami home and correct the mistakes. was unapologetic about the blunders when she told the Associated Press that others present when the mosaic was installed should have caught them.
Besides, she said, it's art.

"does spelling count?"
At a library, it really should count!
I once heard a proposal that all businesses abusing the English language (Kwik Trip, Qwik Trip, etc.) should be fined! So, I say, fine the artist and drag her bum back to fix her mistakes. Or, change the silly law that makes "artistic" work sacrosanct.
Then just repaint the whole wall. It's THEIR wall. Not the artist's.
It matters to me because this is a library. What if the art was in the lobby of a school? Ugly art. Ugly attitude.
I'm shocked that the city council didn't celebrate her "spelling diversity" and leaf the mural as is.
The state has a law forbidding the owners of public art from getting rid of it if they don't like it? They require you to get the freaking artist's permission before you throw your own property away!!! What lunatic state ... oh. It's California.
I guess they could label it, "Why An Education is Unnecessary".
This is the correct answer. My hat is off to you, sir.
She's having a little sniveling snit-fit over this, is she? She thinks the library should give her more money, does she? It was the library's responsibility to notice the errors, was it?
Absolutely. If anyone deserved to be humiliated, it is she. Her attitude is revolting.
Yes, spelling does count. If you don't believe me, try misspelling the screen name of someone you're addressing a reply to on FR.
Agreed. If someone doesn't grasp the spelling difference between similarly spelled words, it's a pretty safe bet they don't grasp the distinct meanings either. It's getting harder and harder to find people who can distinguish between affect/effect and insure/ensure.
I'll bet she spelled Che's name correctly.
Actually, "Shakespere" is the only one she can be forgiven for. While "Shakespeare" has become standardized in modern times as the correct spelling of the bard's name, he himself spelled it in a variety of ways including "Shakespere".
The city council members are none too swift themselves. After all, they voted to hire and pay this woman for producing this "art" without pinning down the details of what she was going to do. She could have written "Aztlan, take back California" (or worse!) for all the contract said on the matter.

"Maria Alquilar, who said last week she would not fix the 11 misspellings because people had been so mean to her, apparently changed her mind after a discussion with Jim Piper, Livermore's assistant city manager.
She has agreed to sign a contract promising to correct the blunders but refused to return until her vociferous critics have calmeShe will receive another $6,000 -- plus expenses -- to change "Eistein" to "Einstein," "Shakespere" to "Shakespeare" and "Gaugan" to "Gauguin," among other mistakes.
d down, Piper said.
