Some see acts as partisans going awry - potshots not just rhetoric

Damage: Pre-election tensions in Howard County are blamed for the destruction and theft of Bush signs, and a Kerry backer now suspects a political motive behind a shot fired into his home.

potshots not just rhetoric

TENSIONS OVER next month's presidential election might have reached a boiling point in an unlikely place: polite, prosperous Howard County.

There, lawn-sign swipings and other mundane tactics might have given way to more violent political expressions. Early Wednesday, a bullet was fired through a window of the Ellicott City home of Anthony McGuffin, 51, an active Democrat and former candidate for Congress and the state House of Delegates.

McGuffin's house sports a Kerry-Edwards campaign sign, along with one for U.S. Rep. Elijah E. Cummings on the front lawn.

Howard county police are investigating the shooting, and no one knows the motive of the shooter, who directed a bullet into a lighted second-floor window about 2 a.m.

But the incident follows the burning of a large Bush/Cheney sign in western Howard last month - one of a series of Republican signs destroyed or vandalized that prompted the arrest of an Ellicott City man who was accused of destroying one. Democratic Party leader Wendy Fiedler said the man charged has no party affiliations.

McGuffin said he saw a man pouring red paint on a Bush sign recently and stopped to persuade him to quit.

Kerry/Edwards signs have disappeared along Centennial Lane too, he said.

"It's crazy. There's no doubt about it," McGuffin said about the sign destruction.

McGuffin, a teacher and musician, said he had just left his desk at his Main Street home when he heard a loud noise. He couldn't find the source after a quick investigation, so he went to bed.

This is reminding me of the days after the OKC bombing when Clinton and his fellow demonrats tried to blame conservative talk radio. They claimed that talk radio hosts stirred up hatred and promoted violence.

Isn't that what we're seeing HERE, except in reverse? The hatred the left has been spewing for years is now resulting in REAL violence. Theft of computers from the Bush/Cheney HQ in Washington State. Now gunshots have been fired into TWO Bush/Cheney HQs around the country. How long will it be until someone is actually shot, perhaps killed? You can bet the libs and the MSM will not blame their own hate-filled, non-stop diatribe against Bush and Republicans in general. No doubt they'll find a way to blame Rush Limbaugh.

I'm captain of the 64th voting precinct here in Sarasota county, for the Republican Exec. Committee, and I've been working overtime on yard sign distribution for over a month now. We have our area pretty well seeded, both private yards and street corners. Theft seems to be sporadic and more a case of targets of opportunity that any organized effort. In fact, we are seeing less of this (knocking on wood here) than in 2000 and 2002. Having all those Bush/Cheney and Katherine Harris signs springing up on the streets has indeed prompted the opposition to be "showing their colors" a lot lately, though, which isn't surprising.

Yard sign theft is one of my pet peeves. I hate it when it happens to me, and I will just as quickly boot the butt of anyone on our side who does it. We will play fair and still stomp the dems in November. Something interesting happened this morning, though -- at 0645 when I went out to raise the flag, there were two crumpled-up Kerry/Edwards signs thrown in my front yard. I don't know by who, or why. I saved them as "war trophies", but I can only guess as to what the story is there.

Stay frosty, folks. This election is going to be at least as interesting as the last.

I heard on a Baltimore radio station that, in addition to the incidents listed above, the Howard County police arrested a husband-wife team out stealing and defacing Bush signs.

See. Bush really does bring families together.

Aw, the wire framed ones do make awfully handy target stands for target shooting. But it's really better to wait until after the election's over....

I actually like to see the Fairly Backwards signs......lets me ID the idiots in my neighborhood. So far not one K-E sign short of what the dog left on the lawn that can be confused with the DNC Socialist official party platform.....Go east till ya smell it and north till ya step in it.

Stay safe !

I think I'm gonna go to the local zoo and get some elephant dung. I won't take the K-E sign as that's a crime but I will fertilize the area around the sign. Now the problem of how to carry around a gunny sack of elephant sh*t till I find a K-E sign.............could be weeks where I live.
