Just guessing, but if they did a poll of all public high school teachers, of the 10% that are conservative, I bet you that 80% of them are history teachers.
The only teachers I ever had in high school who even showed a hint of conservatism, were history teachers. The one was a full fledge John Wayne, General Patton clone.

I'd say you are guessing. Conservatives make up more than 10% - at least in my area. More like 40.

This was my experience in a public high school and a liberal Christian college. Also among the students in the history classes. I wanted to be an English major at said liberal college, but the department was so liberal I couldn't tolerate it.
The history professors were a dream come true. One of them introduced me to The American Spectator.
Living here in California I feel very fortunate that my son's 8th grade american studies teacher is a Bush supporter. Who'd of thunk, since I haven't had any hope all the years he's been in school so far. He told his teacher I told him that the sac bee was a communist rag and his teacher agreed.
