John Kerry's fake tan fiasco
The Age ^ | October 1, 2004 | Staff

There isn't a woman alive who won't sympathise with Democrat John Kerry for doing what he did this week.

Who among us has not done the same thing? That is, made a stupid, stupid decision regarding our appearance right before a Very Important Event.

Senator Kerry, who is trying to win the race for the White House, hit the bottle. The fake tan bottle. Or maybe the sun bed. No one is sure. But whatever, the day before this morning's all important first TV debate with President George Bush, Senator Kerry turned orange.

Not a little bit orange. His face is like a Halloween pumpkin. Or, as the New York Post put it, Senator Kerry, who is from icy Boston, has a tan "even George Hamilton would envy".

Talk-back callers had a good chuckle. America's top-rating comedian, Jay Leno, said Senator Kerry's face (like a city faced with terrorism) was on "orange alert". Matt Drudge, who runs the Drudge Report website, wondered whether he had been campaigning "in the rust belt".

The tan was so obvious that the Kerry camp, which really wants to get back to debating the big issues, such as war, was forced to explain it. They said Senator Kerry got the tan at a football match. The New York Post didn't buy it, nor did anybody else. Dr Ted Daly, of Garden City Dermatology, said: "Wow! That is a tan. From a tanning salon."

The New York Sun said Senator Kerry's "sudden, orangey-bronze glow" was highly unlikely to be the real deal. It quoted Cynthia House, of Enhance Me, who said: "It's an artificial tan. They went a little overboard."

Has anyone seen any pictures of him today? Has he found some way to correct it?

That tan wouldn't be the envy of Hamilton, Hamilton is a believer in real tans that look healthy and robust.

Why can't he just say he went to a tanning bed? Why make up something that sounds better?

I've seen a photo since the "bright orange" episode, where it looked like his face had been bleached, but his neck remained much darker.

Any woman over the age of 16 with ANY sense knows you don't do ANYTHING that big before you have an Important Event without giving it a test-run weeks in advance.

You don't change the color of your hair the night before your wedding, or ANYTHING along those lines.

Kerry's a twit.

That is, made a stupid, stupid decision regarding our appearance right before a Very Important Event.

My wife, who is hispanic with jet black hair, tried to frost her hair (this was in 1969) the night before our wedding. Big mistake. I married a little hispanic woman with orange hair. Needless to say, our wedding pictures stay in the photo album stashed away from prying eyes.

I wasn't old enough to see it, but I heard Nixon had a similar problem during the Kennedy-Nixon debates. They put makeup on Nixon, and when he started perspiring, it looked like he was melting. People who listened to the debates on the radio thought Nixon won, but people who watched it on TV thought Kennedy won.

Something to ponder for tonight.

What is so ridiculous about the Kerry campaign's excuse, is that no other member that was playing football with Kerry is looking like the Great Pumpkin.

Since Clinton took the role of "the first black President", I think Kerry is aiming for one of the colors that hadn't been taken yet...

FYI...

From a web site selling Canthaxanthin Pills....

Q. Is canthaxanthin dangerous?
A. Canthaxanthin is 100% natural. It is completely safe with moderate use.

Q. Will it turn me orange?
A. No, not if you take the recommended dosage.

Q. Can I tan outside or in the tanning bed with this product?
A. Yes, it actually increases the effects of C_____. Your tan will be deeper and darker.

Q. How many tablets in each bottle?
A. 90 pills come in each bottle and depending on your dosage requirements, 90 pills will last somewhere between 1 month to 4 months.

Q. If I stop taking it will my tan fade?
A. Yes. If you discontinue use of C_____ you tan will begin to fade within 2-3 weeks. If you start taking C_____ again, your tan will begin to return.

Q. How soon will it work?
A. Everyone will see different results. The average person will begin to notice a slight color change within 1 – 2 weeks.

Q. Will it hurt my liver?
A. Canthaxanthin is a natural substance and is considered harmless with reasonable use.

Q. Will it help prevent sun cancer?
A. While C_____ will decrease amount of time needed to tan, C_____ does not block nor protect against any UV rays.

Q. What do I do if I take too much?
A. If you do begin to notice orange coloring cut back on usage by half or discontinue completely and drink plenty of water to flush the Canthaxanthin out of your body.

Colorful

Orange you glad you saw my face?
Dig my manly tan.
Terayza says I’m rugged,
It came from a can.
Of course the botox smooths me out,
I think I look great.
My hair is my best sell point,
Bad looks are my fate.
When I lose and I’ll lose big,
I know who to blame.
George Bush without much effort,
Sure makes me look lame.

That and that there was an article in the Harvard Crimson about the discussion BEFORE the game about the "orange glow."

NewMediaFan posted this as part of a larger piece of content:

CampKerry says that Lurch wants to get back to 'debating the big issues'. When was he ever debating the big issues in this campaign? Unless I missed it hasn't he been spending most of his time complaining about the Swifties (God love them) and defending his deplorable military service record (because its stellar compared to his Senate record). When has he ever talked, coherently about any single subject and stayed on message for more than one 10 second sound bite?

As I recall, his grooming habits are not new to the news either. Didn't he pull a Clintoon and fly his 'stylist' oout for a $1000 haircut a couple months ago. Now the Tan scandal. Four years of these types of stories is just what we need. There sure wouldn't be anything of subtance to report.
