Schieffer: Rathergate 'a Terrible Blow' to CBS's Credibility
NewsMax ^ | 9/28/04 | Carl Limbacher

Posted on 09/28/2004 6:02:41 PM PDT by wagglebee

Longtime CBS newsman and "Face the Nation" host Bob Schieffer said Monday that the Rathergate forged document scandal has been "a terrible blow" to the network's credibility.

"I love CBS. I love the people who work here. This is a terrible blow to all of us," Schieffer told the ABC Radio network's Sean Hannity.

"It's hurt us in two ways," Schieffer said. "Clearly, it's hurt our credibility. But it's also like somebody just came up and kicked us in the stomach. It's hurt us emotionally."

The top CBS newsman made his comments as the latest ratings for the CBS "Evening News" took a sharp turn for the worse, with the New York Post reporting an overall 31 percent drop in viewership for Rather's broadcast in the last week.

In his comments to Hannity, however, Schieffer did his best to present a united front, repeatedly insisting "we made a mistake" rather than pointing a finger at his longtime colleague.

"I work at CBS, so I'm going to use the term 'we'," he explained.

"Dan Rather's been my friend for 35 years. I hope he'll be my friend 35 years from now, when we're both about 120 years old. But he made a mistake. A source lied to him. Now, what we've got to find out is, why were the safeguards – what happened that we didn't determine what was going on here?"

Schieffer said he intended to help rebuild his network's credibility "one story at a time," after admitting "we've got to eat a little humble pie here."

Hopefully that is a feeling you will be getting used to having a whole lot!

Yes indeed, especially if they plan on continuing their severe liberal bias!

Don't care much about the forgery... but the (proposed?) collusion between the forger, CBS and the DNC is very disturbing.

A source lied to him.

And Bonnie lied to Clyde.

They still don't get it...

What Rather did was hardly a "mistake." It was quite purposeful.

And, isn't Rather still sticking to the "info contained in the memos is still true" line?

Actually, Sean Hannity's radio show is on ABC radio, which is where the interview took place.

I wouldn't watch CBS if it was on fire.

Schieffer lives in the same noxious cocoon as Rather. No sympathy here. Hope the network crashes in toto.

Rather staked his reputation on the source after everyone knew the source was bad. Since the source was bad his reputation is gone. Simple, that's what is going on. LOL

Except for situations clearly involving television broadcast of visual images (such as the morning of the 9/11 attacks), I don't watch teeeveee news. Too much teee-heee brain-dead airblown emptiness, too little substance.

SeeBS pulled its own plug. I quit watching long ago.

Yet Danny Boy was just so very eager to put something out that slams GWB.

Why is that not in question, Mr. Schieffer?

You should feel bad, Mr. Schieffer, as well your entire, liberal, Rather biased company.

You should feel ashamed as well.

BTW, did I mention that SeeBS sucks?

No, bob, now what you need to find out is, WHO were the PERPETRAITORS?

"Dan Rather's been my friend for 35 years. I hope he'll be my friend 35 years from now"

Uh, Bob. Better go back and read Bernard Goldberg's book Bias again. Rather has had a grudge against Goldberg ever since Bernard admitted in a column that there is liberal bias in the media. He made sure Goldberg was eventually forced out of CBS. I guarantee you, Bob, you are now on Dan's "list". Watch your back.

Well, if a "news channel or reader" works on a story for five years and still can't find real evidence on what they are dreaming about, then they will go for anything that can bring the president down. They jumped at straws, hoping they could pull it off. They had worked on a bogus story for FIVE years, I am sure the "news reader" presured them for something to stop BUSH. See BS is just what it is.

Funny how they think it's all about them isn't it? They just don't get it. It's we the people who have been kicked by them. I really don't care about employee morale at CBS. Any company which operates ethically and truthfully has no employee morale problem.

Put some ice on it Bob and think about the harm to the public, not CBS.

Aside from the elites employed at CBS, does anyone really believe the CBS had any credibility?
