War Stories (Excerpt re Bush National Guard Service)
Newsweek ^ | February 23, 2004 | Evan Thomas

Posted on 09/27/2004 9:14:18 AM PDT by cyncooper

"The standard rap against Bush is that he was ducking combat by joining the Guard. Actually, the Texas Air Guard had a program called Palace Alert that allowed pilots to volunteer for flight time in Vietnam. Three of Bush's fellow pilots—Udell, Woodfin and Fred Bradley—recalled to NEWSWEEK that Bush inquired with the base commander about signing up for Palace Alert. He was told no; he had too few flying hours at the time and his plane, the F-102, was by then deemed obsolete for air combat."

Thanks, cyn. I wasn't able to find a date on the article. Is it in this week's issue?

I wonder why kerry being in the enlisted guard for one month then resigning to join the guard as a reserve officer has not been brought up. Many liberals say that guard was service was on the level as the Boy Scouts but do not even realize that kerry was in the guard. Also, how many meetings did kerry miss when he was protesting and in france.

This is the first time I've seen as many as three pilots reported in such a story. The media's bias for sKerry is cracking...

I included the date at top (went to page one of the article). It is from FEBRUARY.

When the dems/media revived the attack on GWB and the snarling jackal press briefing happened.

Evan Thomas penned this...I didn't read the whole thing, just your excerpt. I better go skim the whole thing!

The article is from February, so it was found and reported then ignored in favor of allowing the dems to rant about Bush avoiding service in Vietnam unchallenged.

This is great news but I wonder why the MSM is holding back and NOT Publishing the papers Bush Completed when Requesting Viet Nam service?

And since the date stamp is for the February 23 issue, it was written--what---about two weeks before in keeping with the way news magazine publication works?

This article fails to mention that Kerry only enlisted after his request for a deferment to study in France was denied. And then he enlisted in the Guard. If getting into the Guard was so difficult, why has no one asked the obvious question: Did Kerry use influence to get into the Guard?

Three pilots who remember Bush volunteerng for Vietnam duty = three right-wing Bush supporters- to the MSM.

Since the date on a magazine is the last day it's available at the newsstand, I'd think 2 weeks is a good estimate.
And I do remember that the media got the bulk of GWB's military records on Feb 13th.

I'm reading more of the article. According to Evan Thomas GWB arrived at Harvard "with a chip on his shoulder".

More:

Discharged from the Navy in 1970, John Kerry was racked with nightmares about his time in combat. He grew his hair and joined Vietnam Veterans Against the War. Some of the vets, most of whom were working class, resented the patrician Kerry. A VVAW leader named Scott Camil told The Boston Globe that a vet tried to reach Kerry at home and was told by someone, presumably a maid, "Master Kerry is not at home." At the next meeting, someone hung a sign on Kerry's chair that read, FREE THE KERRY MAID.

LOL

But the blue-collar voters regarded him as a carpetbagger and joked about "Kerrymandering."

How did that precious term escape our notice all this time?!

But look at this demonstrably false assertion:

Like combat veterans of any war, Kerry did not talk much about his time under fire for many years. "I've known him for 35 years," Sen. Edward Kennedy told NEWSWEEK, "and he would never talk about the war."

Really.

According to Evan Thomas GWB arrived at Harvard "with a chip on his shoulder".

Evan Thomas, the grandson of one of the founders of the ACLU and the Socialist Party of the US -- Norman Thomas.

When there's bias in stories like this, sometimes there's an explanation...

Isn't this Scott Camil the member of the VVAW who was the chief advocate of assassinating pro-war senators?
