TEHRAN, Sept 26 (AFP) - Iranian police broke up a demonstration calling for increased freedoms outside Tehran university on Sunday, the student agency ISNA and witnesses reported.

"People gathered around 4.30 pm (1200 GMT) in front of Tehran university's main entrance shouting slogans and handing out flowers and sweets," the news agency said.

"These people are obviously under the influence of the Iranian opposition based abroad," added the report, in an apparent reference to anti-regime satellite television channels broadcast into Iran.

Witnesses confirmed that hundreds of people had gathered in front of the university shouting pro-freedom slogans.

The report said the gathering was broken up by police, but there was no suggestion that any violent clashes took place.

An AFP reporter who toured the area around the university later in the evening reported heavy traffic but no sign of any fresh gatherings

Hmmmmm, the other thread is vastly different. But this one seems to have relied on reports from the French press. I think I'd sooner trust the OTHER thread.

You know, the Iranian left sounds a lot better than our left. Can we trade leftists with the Iranians?

It's 10PM in Tehran. If this started at 4;30, it could be over by now.

There is a lot of wishful thinking in all those Iranian freedom posts that pop up regularly. I almost think that they are a creation of Iranian intelligence designed to make Americans think that there is a substantial freedom movement in place so as to forestall US military action.

But who knows for sure. I'm positive that there are real patriots risking their lives there. But those posts are something else. I could be wrong.

The AFP is a regime supporting French news organization. Read Timmerman's book, the French Betrayl of America.

Check out my post of the demonstration:

I don't believe this happened. I'll wait until tomorrow and see if it's on CBS news.

Can one assume this means the police support reform also?

The mullahs have a lot of power especially when they are supported by the Revolutionary Guard that has the tanks and other war fighting equipment. The mullahs also provide the direction on the application of "Shahria" If this is anything like the revolution in 1978 - 1979, it will not be bloodless.

As I have said in another report, that the media will get back at Freepers thru false reporting. I find this one to be some what hard to believe because events are happening tooo fast, IMHO. We Freepers now have to be careful what comes about our way.

Understood.

But this report was coming from TV in Iran. And a television station that tends to be at least somewhat against the horrific powers that be, there.

We know for sure there was a demonstration. Now we need to know if it was greatly exaggerated in numbers, and if so, why. And if a Freeper did it, bummer.

I posted the report. I originally heard it from Behrooz Sour-esrafil a respected reporter on Azadi TV.

I then heard the same thing from sources inside of Iran.

Crowd estimates are always difficult to judge if you have ever been in a huge crowds, but the southern California based opposition TV broadcasters are getting non stop reports of huge crowds from Iranians inside of Iran.
