U.S. Arrests Commander of Iraqi Nat'l Guard

Sunday, September 26, 2004

BAGHDAD, Iraq — American troops have arrested a senior commander of the U.S.-trained Iraqi National Guard (search) for alleged ties to insurgents, underscoring the obstacles toward building a strong Iraqi security force capable of taking over from U.S. troops and restoring stability to the country.

Lt. Gen. Talib al-Lahibi (search), who previously served as an infantry officer in Saddam Hussein's army, was detained Thursday in the province of Diyala, northeast of Baghdad, said Lt. Col. Steven Boylan, a spokesman for coalition forces in Iraq.

Boylan said Sunday that authorities were trying to clear up confusion over what exact position al-Lahibi held within the Iraqi National Guard. He declined to provide details on the general's suspected ties to militants waging a 17-month insurgency to topple the interim Iraqi authorities and oust coalition forces from the country.

Bad, bad, bad if there's traitors throughout the Iraqi National Guard.

All these former Hussein army guys need to be watched very closely.

This is the reason why we disbanded the former Iraqi Army. The critics who said we should not have disbanded their standing military forces are all wrong.

A firing squad using Iraqi National Guardsmen is in order.

Must be tough trying to be a double agent for the losing side. I mean those Americans have eyes in the skies, eyes in the walls, and ears everywhere...

[Sarcasm torpedo ARMED. FIRE!]

Whose idea was it, anyway, to re-cycle various functionaries
from Saddaam's govt. into the new government?
Ted Kennedy's? or Terry McAuliffe's?

He conceded, however, that his delegation had not arranged any meetings with Iraqi religious or political leaders and did not know whether they would be able to reach the kidnappers.

Islamofascists clerics don't know who the terrorists are? Yeah right. Put a tail on them.

That's too true. So many will being taking payoff's from all sides, positiioning themselves to be ahead no matter who prevails.

For some Iraqi soldiers it's like they say about Afghanistan: You can't own the army but you can rent them.

We need to spread a lot of money around, buy some alliegence if necessary.

If the man's position isn't clear, why is Fox using a clearly incorrect 'scare' headline?

we made a terrible mistake disbanding the military - unless of course you consider that we took a "tribe" broke it up and worked to create new democratic tribes.

The outsider is learning the POWER of leadership and they like it. Getting rid of the military may not have been so bad and in a year we may find that despite the ideas of McCain, George Will, Luger, Hagel, Biden and dozens of others who choose politics over service the service guys are right, where right and will be right.

"The message is simple, it's a humanitarian one. ... He (Bigley) was a noncombatant, Islam does not endorse the capture of noncombatants, let alone the killing of them," Abdullah said.

Ah, yes. The Religion of Peace - Not.

I wondered about that, too. My war zone answer:

"Arrest first, ask questioins later."

The only reason we could have had not to disband the old Iraqi army would have been to install a 'Baath Lite' regime in Iraq.

But then we would have had a real civil war with the Shiites and Kurds.

So once again, the Bush administration made the right decision and is being blamed for it by an ignorant media and an opportunistic and seditious Democratic party.

I have no problem with the arrest first, ask questions later idea.

But Fox shouldn't become like CBS by putting out attention getting headlines that don't reflect the story accurately. I've seen several different stories about this guy's actual command responsibility. Putting him as Head of National Guard may have jumped the gun if not the shark.

Exactly. I hope that enough of the American Public figures out the

"seditious DemonicRat party"

that President Bush wins with a very large majority.

The Fox headline was 100% accurate: "U.S. Arrests Commander of Iraqi Nat'l Guard"

The U.S. did, in fact, arrest the guy.

Now was the guy really helping the terrorists? We shall see.

Arrest first, check it later, then get it right. But protect the boys first.
