FREEP the Station in Seattle that Allegedly Fired Brian Maloney for Criticizing Dan Rather
Me | 09/24/2004 | Vanity-FREEP

As you have heard, a talk show host, Brian Maloney, on 710 AM KIRO in Seattle was fired.

Maloney claims it was because of his criticism of Dan Rather - on a station owned by CBS. Station Manager Ken Berry told Maloney they were not happy with the direction Maloney was going.

If you would like to contact the station management (i.e. Ken Berry especially) via email you may do so below:

Those wishing to contact the station managers, etc... about Mr. Maloney's firing may do so:

Please Note: Since I do not have any information beyond Mr. Maloney's claim that this was the reason he was fired, I am not attesting to Maloney's veracity. But he has been willing to go very public with his accusation, and this IS a CBS affiliate, and when you visit their website there is NO DOUBT they are left-leaning. Interviews with John Kerry highlighted on the right hand menu bar. Top political news story: Kerry Attacks Bush for Iraq. Dori Monson show features interview with Daily Show's Jon Stewart staff member.

According to Ken Berry (on Fox), the talk show host was fired because the Seattle Seahawks games absorbed 2 of his 3 hour block. He only worked on Sundays and having a one hour show wasn't worth it or needed. Berry says other radio hosts criticized CBS and Dan Rather and they weren't fired. This may have actually been the case.

I've read the threads on this subject and it seems people are split in their opinion.

Do you dispute the station leans left? CLICK HERE for KIRO AM 710 WEBSITE

Do you dispute the station is a CBS affiliate?

Do you dispute that the station management has given an unsatisfactory response to the questions raised by the media in regards to Maloney's firing?

Who are their other right-leaning talk show hosts. The threads I've read FReepers have said there are none. I've reasearched the website but I am clueless on these local personalities and therefore looking it up. But I do not accept the station manager's statement that other's criticized it and didn't get fired because the victim is a conservative. This is like MoveOn saying they were tough on Clinton because they called for him to be censured, ya know? :)

He wasn't fired for his comments about Rather. Dori Monson, who also has a show on Kiro has been blasting Dan Rather since the beginning on these forged documents. Dori also talked about this Maloney firing on his show, and said that it has nothing to do with criticizing Rather.

I live in Seattle and am familiar with the local stations including KIRO. The same Ken Berry is Station manager for the conservative station in Seattle KTTH. Baloney is trying to get sympathy by playing victim.

I know nothing of the political leanings of anybody at that station. Some of the radio hosts, be they liberal of conservative, were said to have criticized CBS and Dan Rather. I just reported what I heard on Fox. As Fox would say, you decide. :)

Really? It seems others take a different view than you.

Blog on the KIRO Firing of One of Their Few Conservative Hosts

By the way - what is it about Maloney that you don't like? You seem happy to see him gone.

Kiro's definately a liberal station, but their sister station, KTTH, is owned by the same company and is decidedly NOT liberal.

The story I heard from Mike Siegal was that they really did need to bump him for Seahawks coverage, but were considering a slot for him on KTTH. In the meantime, he ran off and started talking to the media about it, badmouthing his former employer.

I have occasionally listened to Maloney and he is alright but nothing special. I don't like crybabies who lie in order to further their career. Have you ever listened to KIRO?

I've just done my due dilligence on Berry. He's about as far left as they come.

I think this Maloney guy is probably right, and I think the lack of support from rival talk show hosts at KTTH (who also work for Berry) is no different than the fact that KNEW San Francisco hosts would never back up KSFO hosts, nor would KFBK Sacramento hosts ever back up KTKZ. All four of those stations are conservative. But, you don't defend your rivals when they sink.

I wouldn't call Dori a conservative, except in comparison to the hard core lefties on that station. He is funny, and has an entertaining show, mainly Washington state and local issues.

I never listened to Maloney's show, but did hear him one week when he guest hosted for Dori. Thing I liked best was he read some comments on the air that I had emailed to him. Dori's never done that, so I gave up on emailing him. I've also never gotten past his screener the few times I've called in.

I listened to it a little bit when I was there a few years ago. But only briefly. As I said, my knowledge of the on air personalities is limited (outside of Dave Ross of course, but then alas we have a Democrat Candidate for Congress - lovely, another tipoff as to which way the station leans).

If there was a real story KVI the other conservative station would be all over it. Ken is liberal but he wouldn't let that get in the way of station ratings.

I don't buy it. Look at their lineup. They sacrifice their one true blue conservative? Ummm... doesn't add up.

The station manager for KTTH and KIRO is a way way lefty liberal.

Let me ask this: why not get rid of Mike Webb who "called for the death of President Bush and Secretary Rumsfeld for 'war crimes.'"

Hmmm... me thinks it's the liberal bias of Ken Berry - hence why the conservative who criticizes Rather is "not the direction the station is looking for."

No they wouldn't.... you missed my post or disagree with me. Competing conservative talk show hosts are NOT allies.

It's frustrating, but trust me, I've done enough political events in enough cities and been totally discouraged. They can't stand each other... they viciously tear each other apart off the air and sometimes on the air.

They revel in seeing their ideological competitors in the same market sink because that means less or no competition for themselves.

Remember - they have to get ratings, not win elections for ideological or partisan candidates or issues in order to get and keep their jobs.

They get rid of one of their only conservatives at KIRO.

And they keep a guy who calls for the death of Bush and Rumsfeld and who is described on the KIRO personality bio as:

Hosting talk shows since 1996 at KIRO, Webb also finds himself involved in Beltway politics, making occasional trips back to Washington DC. Lobbying for Hate Crimes legislation and Ted Kennedy's Employment Non Discrimination Act (ENDA), has gotten Mike into some interesting situations including a shouting match with Martina Navratalova about whether being Vegetarian or Coming Out is more important. When he's not doing the radio show, Webb produces audio and does voice-over work on documentaries, industrial, internet and commercial work at his studio.

Favorite Interviews: Attorney Gerry Spence, activists Michael Moore, and Norman Soloman, UN Weapons Inspector Scott Ritter, "Serving In Silence" author, Grethe Cammermeyer.
