Weakening system is downgraded, but threat of heavy rain remains for area

Storm watching gave way to waiting Thursday night as Ivan's remnants trudged ashore in far southwest Louisiana and began what was expected to be a slow weekend traipse across Southeast Texas.

By 10 p.m., the National Weather Service had downgraded Ivan to a tropical depression and canceled all warnings.

Nonetheless, the weakening system, which is expected to begin drifting into the Houston area today, still could drop five- to 10 inches of rain across the region.

Wandering Ivan certainly must have set some sort of record. I have heard there was one Hurrican which lasted longer, but which one could match it track? For the storm which nearly blew me away last Saturday in Pennsyvania to end up going ashore again in Texas has to be almost unique.

Anyone got a graphic showing Ivan's meanderings?

On the NHC site, I found a table of the longest-lasting Atlantic hurricanes on record. If we count everything since September 2, Ivan's been up for 22 days; Ivan still would have some time to go to surpass Hurricane Ginger (path, 28 days) in 1971, but it's up there.

Looking for other paths like that will take some time, but it should be interesting searching. I've looked over some (back to 1934) and have seen loops, hairpin turns, odd directions, reversals, and even "knots," but nothing quite like Ivan's in looping so far back south and west.

Anyone got a graphic showing Ivan's meanderings?

The best that I can now find is a similar map, though it draws a straight line between an update in Virginia and an update in the Gulf and doesn't elaborate on the remnants passing over Florida, for example.

Anyone got anything that shows the interim path?
