Police Shoot Man Who Threatened Them with Cobras

Police shot a man after he wrapped himself with two deadly cobras and threatened to commit suicide, then swung the snakes at officers who had rushed to his home in southern Austria.
One of the cobras bit the 40-year-old man in the hand during the stand-off in Leoben, in the province of Styria.
He underwent emergency surgery for the snake bite and the gunshot wound and remained was in critical condition today.
Two policemen arrived at the man’s apartment after he sent a mobile phone text message to his girlfriend saying he planned to kill himself.
The officers unsuccessfully tried to overpower the man by using pepper spray, and one of the officers shot the man in the thigh after he began swinging the cobras at them, police said. He was bitten while handling the snakes, they said.
A reptile expert called to the scene said the man, a snake dealer, had more than 60 poisonous snakes in his apartment.

Why did they go to all that trouble for a potential suicide? Just like we had it with OJ Simpson. The proper [and cheaper] way to handle either situation would be: "Do it! Do it! Be a man! Do it!"

Uh, yeah, unless it turns out he was clinically depressed. If their brain isn't working right, they should probably be stopped from commiting suicide, if possible. Though the cop shooting the guy he'd come to save is a hair ironic (just a hair mind you, as I'm told this happens surprisingly often)

Apparently a song was playing on his home stereo during the "Snakeoff". The lyrics went..."I don't like spiders and snakes...but that's not what it takes to love me."
Suicide, and he's halfway there.
