Albanian Authorities Blow Up Cross Outside Orthodox Church

Greek Euro-deputies Ioannis Varvitsiotis and Kostis Hatzidakis, elected with the governing party of New Democracy, asked for the immediate intervention of the European Commission regarding the incident in the village Tzara in Albania where a cross, near the church of St. Dimitrios, was blown up by the Albanian authorities.
For the record, a few days ago Albanian police officers, without offering any explanations to the local authorities in Tzara, placed explosives around the cross next to the church of St. Dimitrios and blew it up. The action took place after pressures exerted by the Albanian mass media because it appears that the cross was annoying to the archaeological site nearby.
Mr. Varvitsiotis and Mr. Hatzidakis stated that such incidents of religious and nationalist fanaticism seriously hurt bilateral relations, stressing that the ethnic Greek minority in Albania and the Albanian immigrants in Greece should become a bridge of cooperation and friendship. They mentioned that Albania, which wants a European prospect, has an obligation to comprehend this message, adding that mutual respect and understanding will serve better the interests of both sides.

Sigh, an example of interfaith cooperation when Muslims are the majority.

The fact that it was a Cross was cause enough for its destruction in the minds of these people.

One of our parishioners, a young woman who is very special to my family, is over there in Albania on an OCMC mission for two years. We've been afraid of this ever since she was sent there by the idiots who run the OCMC.

Thanks Koloktronis. Actually I was kind of sure about the OC being Orthodox Christian, but I was mostly stuck on the MC bit. Thanks again for clearing that up for me :)

Wasn't some beautiful, centuries old fresco of Jesus destroyed in Kosovo a while ago?

Odd... not a single mention of "Islam" or "Muslim" in an article about a non-Muslim religious symbol being destroyed. Hmmm....
To: ma bell
Cant they just messed up courts to get rid of religious symbols like our people do?

Yes, the fresco of Christ the Savior in Ljeviska Mother of God Cathedral.
It is no ordiary fresco. It shows La Renaissance originated in Serbia, before La Renaissance officialy started in Italy several decades later.
