THE government was drawn into a diplomatic row with the United States and Italy last night, after a senior British ambassador described President George Bush as "the best recruiting sergeant for al-Qaeda".
Sir Ivor Roberts, the British ambassador in Rome, made the extraordinary comment during a weekend meeting of politicians and journalists.
His remarks were designed to be off-the-record but they proved so explosive that Italy's leading newspaper, Corriere della Sera, decided to breach the rule and publish them.
Corriere reported Sir Ivor as saying: "George W Bush is the best recruiting sergeant for al-Qaeda. If there is anyone ready to celebrate his eventual re-election it is al-Qaeda, while its clear that the Palestinians hope that a Kerry victory will help unblock the situation."
The Corriere reporter, Moncia Guerzoni, added that Sir Ivor also said that the Bush administration was "conditioned and pressured by groups of powerful Israelis".
Sir Ivor last night issued a short statement via Britains Foreign Office in London which said: "These remarks as reported do not reflect my personal views."
The Foreign Office, meanwhile, stressed that Sir Ivor had made the remarks at a private meeting and did not expect to be reported.
But by last night, the furore over the controversial comments had escalated into a diplomatic row between Britain, Italy and the US.
A senior administration official at the White House made it clear that the Bush administration took a dim view of Sir Ivors comments.
He told The Scotsman: "I would not consider it proper diplomatic discourse, but they are not comments which would merit a response." Another senior Republican, who is close to the Bush administration, said that George Bush was al-Qaedas greatest enemy and the Italians should be told that.
As pressure mounted on Sir Ivor to make a full apology, it emerged that his remarks had prompted one Italian newspaper editor, Giuliano Ferrara of Il Foglio, to pull out of a dinner at Sir Ivors official residence in Rome.
The comments will come as a particular embarrassment to Tony Blair, who has been the biggest ally of Mr Bush in his war on terror and in Iraq. They are also particularly sensitive given that the British government is trying to secure the release of a British hostage, Kenneth Bigley, who was captured in Baghdad last week along with two Americans, one of whom was reported last night to have been executed by his captors.
The remarks also threaten to damage relations between Mr Blair and Silvio Berlusconi, the Italian prime minister. Mr Blair spent part of his summer holiday this year at Mr Berlusconis villa in Sardinia and the two leaders have a surprisingly close relationship.
The Foreign Office refused to comment on Sir Ivors remarks but said it was not policy to describe the US president in that way.
However, a Foreign Office source confirmed that the comments had been made and added: "It was a Chatham House occasion and the ambassador was not expected to be quoted on this. It is all rather unfortunate. Were not going to be calling him back to the Foreign Office to rebuke him in this case. Had he said these things on the record in a speech then we might be in a different situation."
Sir Ivor, 58, made his comments behind closed doors to a British-Italian think-tank on terrorism, where guests included Chris Patten, former governor of Hong Kong, and Neil Kinnock, former Labour leader.
And no, this is not a duplicate. This one was published by The Scotsman.
Interesting about the Italian journalist bailing out of a dinner invite. I can just imagine the Rats in our media clammering to get an invitation to the event...
See how he made about Israel right away?
EU= Jew haters IMO
If Bush sold out Israel, he'd be beloved by the EU-poens.
Sir Ivor should realize that it is better to remain silent and let them think you a fool, or to open your mouth and remove all doubts......
When Fallujah and other insurgency hotbeds are full, the harvest begins.
High concentrations of foreign fighters is a target rich environment.
The terrorists don't know what's coming!!
Italians prefer Kerry 58 percent to 14 percent. Britons prefer Kerry 47 percent to 16 percent.

IMO, the only thing that I've found to affect the anti-American opinions of many (not all) British conservative political men is to tell them and present evidence that we Americans have become very warlike since the Viet Nam Era. Only then do they try to consider the WOT situation from our point of view. But they usually remain stuck on their sympathies for the "Palestinians," due to Britain having taken the side of the Islamists during the Middle East British Mandate period. Some in the British Empire never forgets its losses of pride or admits any past defeat, political or otherwise.
Right. These people would have left the world alone without George Bush.
"His recent three-year tenure in the rump Yugoslavia, the rather impolite term for Serbia and tiny Montenegro, was marked by criticism, mainly from the US, for his perceived warm relations with Slobadan Milosevic, with whom Roberts wined and dined for England"
and
"Roberts was cheated," said MiodragPerisic, a senior opposition figure. "I'm afraid his good intentions lie on the path to Hell." The Washington Post accused him of being the Serbian president's 'handmaiden'. Worse still, he was nicknamed Ratko Roberts, after the Bosnian Serb military chief General Ratko Mladic. Richard Holbrooke, the US envoy in the region acknowledged Roberts' charm and intellect in his book To End a War, but also said he was "excessively pro-Serb"
...agreed. I think that's been part of the plan, too. In any case, we should intensify the beating for the enemy (along with a "Shut up!" to our fair weather friends) right after November 2nd. Win the Election, then go exterminator on 'em.
As for all of the Britons who see more clearly and are willing to give much to defend their country and ours, I sincerely salute you!
But for the rest, all in America should know about things like that in the post above (be aware) and show our contempt for such chicken-heartedness and lack of moral persuasion.
Who cares they will be under an Islamic flag soon anyway.
That's a good point of interest, BTW. Some friends told me that Britain did something similar for allied reasons regarding recent EU relations.
That proves just how stupid these ragheads are: death is coming to all who persue the "business" of terrorism. As a t-shirt I saw for the 82nd Airborne read: "Death is our Business, and Business is GOOD!"
