For Many in Missouri, Picking a President Is More a Matter of Values Than Policy

Tom Ampleman, a blue-collar union member who lives near this suburb just outside St. Louis, says he voted for Bill Clinton twice and then Al Gore, but he is now grappling with deep religious misgivings about the Democratic Party.

"I haven't declared myself a Republican, but if I had to go in there and vote right now I probably would vote for the Republicans," Mr. Ampleman said recently, sitting in his pickup truck at a public park here.

"I'm not happy with the moral issues at all with the Democrats," continued Mr. Ampleman, who works as a welder at an aerospace company. "The Republicans will hurt me in the long run in providing for my family, but it's probably more important to watch out for the unborn and that kind of stuff."

Missouri, almost evenly split between Republicans and Democrats, straddles the Midwest, the Deep South and the Great Plains, and has some of the sensibility of each region. Elections can turn on the interests of labor unions, farmers, city dwellers or suburban parents.

Its all over for Kerry in MO. The New York Times is just too botoxed to admit it.

"I'm not happy with the moral issues at all with the Democrats," continued Mr. Ampleman

That's because Democrats have no moral issues. They envision a world in which homosexuality is "normal," murdering unborn innocents is "just a choice," and Islamofascist terrorists are "freedom fighters."

Democrats know about as much about morality as a Liberal Arts major knows about the real world (e.g., nothing).

MO will go for The Prez; I say by 5-8 percentage points.

May be higher percentage since Matt Blunt/AG Ashcroft seem to have most of the egregious St.Louis voter fraud under control.

Down here in the hills, Bush will win by 20 points.

Say what? I agree on the values thing. I've learned to vote for character first. But what's with that statement? I've gotten more of my money back under 43 than I'd ever see from Kerry. What's this guy smoking?

Missouri is the SHO-ME state.

For many Missouri Democrats, Kerry SHOWED THEM, and they understood, all too well.

What I want to know is, who originally picked JFK to run?

Bet that person feels like a dope.
