U.S. Democratic presidential hopeful John Kerry's sister was in Montreal on Friday, stumping for expatriate American votes and encouraging them to support her brother.
"I trust you are all registered and will be applying for absentee ballots?" Diane Kerry told one group.
The U.S. presidential election is considered to be extremely close.
A Pew Research Center poll released Friday had Kerry tied with U.S. President George W. Bush. But a Gallup poll had Bush ahead 52-40 among registered voters and 54-39 among the smaller group of likely voters.
The margin of error for the Pew Poll, which sampled 976 people, was plus or minus 3.5 percentage points. The Gallup poll surveyed 767 likely voters and was accurate within plus or minus four percentage points.
Another poll released Thursday had Bush and Kerry even.
"We're aware it will be a close election in many states, and we want to make sure every American that has the right to vote does," Diane, a drama teacher, said.
With 500,000 to 600,000 U.S. citizens in Canada, those votes could make a difference.
Actually, when he was in Toronto on Tuesday for the world premier of his documentary Going Up River: The Long War of John Kerry, filmmaker George Butler also encouraged Democratic supporters in Canada to vote for his friend the Massachusetts senator and Vietnam War veteran.
Americans from outside the U.S. might see their country's relationship with the world differently than those citizens residing in the U.S.
Diane Kerry's pitch reflected that, as she told people: "John has pledged to bring the full weight of the presidency to make relationships with the rest of the world better."
The campaigning might have some impact.
Eric Alper, a Texan studying marketing in Montreal, is a John Kerry fan and was pleased to meet his sister.
"I think it's great that she's here and battling apathy," he said.
While the Republicans also have expat political organizations in Canada, political expert John Parisella said the Democrats' pitch -- delivered by a family member -- was unique.
"It's a sign of reaching out to the world, which in fact is what contrasts Mr. Bush's and Kerry's foreign policy," he said.
Well he's sure not finding them here.
apologies for the previous post...I meant to say
"Texans will tell you this fellow IS either a steer or a queer. Or both."
Is she as damned ugly as Dan Rather's daughter?
Careful, King. She looks like a Leftie!
Kerry's sister is in LaLa Land just like her deranged brother is!
hence the nickname:the Frenchurian Candidate
Diana Kerry (not "Diane" as reported in this thread's story)
why is she still employed by this administration?
