Hats off to new cringe factor record (Or Retread Brit Wit)Actually calls Hal Sutton a Redneck!
Telegraph UK ^ | 9/18/2004 | Martin Johnson

The pressure may have had something to do with it, or there again it might have been that the players were unnerved by the sight of America 's redneck captain Hal Sutton wearing a hat from the Roy Rogers cowboy selection. And had he not been at least partially restrained by protocol, there's not much doubt that Sutton would have sent his players on their way with a cry of "yee haa!"

However, the most likely explanation for the 24 handicap start was the result of the players having to sit through a two-hour opening ceremony that, even by American standards, smashed all known cringe factor records. As the camera panned up and down the 24 players, the last time any of us had seen a row of eyes so completely glazed over was on a fishmonger's slab.

Redneck is a bigoted term, they might as well have said: players were unnerved by the sight of America 's nigger captain Tiger Woods

Martin is really on fire. Rednecks and cowboy hats. Boring American military men. Too much emotion. Can hardly wait for tomorrow's installment. I'm thinking something to do with fat people and corn dogs. Just a wild guess, Brit sports writers don't vary too much.

Ok, they are kicking our butts (most of this was written before that) so I guess they have the right. But it would be nice if you could report British journalists who think they are being witty to some international tribunal.

Redneck is a bigoted term,...

Oh please, being Redneck is nothing more than showing, "A glorious absence of safistication," as per Jeff Foxworthy.

Everyone is a Redneck every once and a while.

Yes and the reason we're getting our butts kick is the US players are so stunned by the hideous vision of the Limeys’ teeth virtually crying out for orthodontia!

:-P

Wrong. Redneck originated as a term to denigrate imigrant farm laborers. "Wetbacks" anyone? The fact that we often use it as a term of affection - just like Blacks who call each other nigger - doesn't change that.

Slioghtly off topic..but on cnnsi.com, there's an excellent piece about how the European team has won over the crowd. During the practice week, and all the hoopla, the Euros took time to walk/talk/interact with the crowd, sign autographs..but the Americans ignored the crowd..Colin Montgomerie got a huge cheer yesterday for asking the photographers to GET DOWN because they were blocking the crowd's sightlines..

Yes, I have it on DVD somewhere, I'll have to dig it out again. One of my good freinds here is British and we remind him of that line as often as possible.

To me, the fact that people get offended by a WORD when it's used affectionately is in itself offensive, however I get your point.

BTW, let's remember that word meanings or overtones sometimes change.

Furthermore, words and signs mean things in diffrent countries.

BLOODY in Britian is a derogetory term just like the F-bomb here. And remember Bush 41 giving the "peace" sign in that county(?) as he was leaving, and to those people that was the equivilent of "The finger" here.

This is a hard subject for me because I'm torn between premise, with which I agree, but also recognize using words in different ways to make a point as long as you're honest about the intended use.

Did you hear Sutton call his pairing of Furyk and another cripples? James Watt redux.

As I recall the term "Redneck" originated in England and was applied to men who worked outdoors--farmers I think. I wonder if this writer is even aware of this?

Bush's 'peace sign' would translate to "V" for victory (Churcill often flashed it).

The derogatory hand signal you are thinking of is the same except the hand is reversed. I think it was originally used to show some Louis or other that the flasher still had his fingers and could still operate a longbow and was thus in defiance of the Louie or Charles or whomever (it's been a long time for me since school!)

That looks like a perfectly appropriate Wide Brim 'Resitol' hat. My guess is it's beaver and about a 10x.

I have one just like it in a 20X which I wear on formal occasions like weddings or whenver I wear a tux, but a 10x seems formal enough to me if you don't 'cowboy it up' too much.

What do those brits know about hats anyway?

Only if it was reversed, palm in.
