Ukraine Opposition Leader Poisoned, Fears Foul Play
Reuters ^ | Sep 17, 2004

KIEV (Reuters) - A Ukrainian opposition leader and presidential candidate is in a Vienna hospital recovering from what his supporters said on Friday appeared to be an attempt on his life by political enemies who poisoned him.

Viktor Yushchenko, a former prime minister, stopped campaigning and flew to Vienna for treatment a week ago after being taken ill with what was first thought to be food poisoning and what turned out to be chemical poisoning, his aides said.

Austrian doctors ran tests and found that Yushchenko's ill health was "due to a serious viral infection and chemical substances which are not normally found in food products," Oleksander Zinchenko, a senior aide, told a news conference.

"There is enough evidence to say that it was an attempt on the life of presidential candidate Yushchenko," said Zinchenko, head of the candidate's campaign for Oct. 31 presidential elections.

"We are talking about not an ordinary case of poisoning, and not really about a bad case of poisoning. We are talking about things which are threatening the life of Viktor Yushchenko."

In a separate statement, Yushchenko's supporters said they expected the authorities to resort to "strong-arm techniques" to ensure the victory of their candidate, Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich.

"A month before their ouster, the authorities are ready to launch any kind of attacks to ensure their survival, including the elimination of competitors," Yushchenko's team said.

OFFICIAL STATEMENTS EXPECTED

The opposition has already accused the authorities of harassing Yushchenko during his campaign outings. In Yanukovich's home-base of Donetsk, youths carried pictures of Yushchenko as Hitler when he arrived.

A spokesman for the prosecutor general's office was quoted as saying by Interfax-Ukraine news agency that the office had yet to receive any complaint.

A spokeswoman for President Leonid Kuchma, who has backed Yanukovich, said a comment would follow. A spokeswoman for Yanukovich also said his office would make a statement later.

Election campaigning in the country of 48 million has been so far marked by sniping, a lack of open debate and widespread apathy on the part of voters. The Oct. 31 election is to replace Kuchma. Yushchenko and Yanukovich are the frontrunners in a field of 26.

Television is swamped with images of Yanukovich, while Yushchenko barely gets a look in. EU and U.S. officials have called on Ukraine, located between the European Union and Russia, to prove its democratic credentials with a fair vote.

Most analysts say neither will win outright in the first round, forcing a second round in November.

Which candidate is backed by Ziggy Brzezinski? I cheer for any but that one.

It seems to me that Russia and vicinity are going through their "gangster phase", much like the U.S. did in the 1930's with Al Capone, Ma Barker, Pretty Boy Floyd and Bonnie and Clyde. I guess when capitalism gets shaky, either a weak spot in it's evolution (U.S.) or weak when starting out (Russia), desperate people do desperate things. Sounds like Russia and vicinity need a top cop who will clean up the mess like Elliot Ness did.

he said that Brzezinki is anti-Russian.

Brzezinski once said - "now that the USSR has fallen, the only remaining enemy of the west is the Orthodox church".

So we say our big enemy is Brzezinski, who wishes for Russia to be dissolved. Brzezinski is a big liberal, btw.

Very good analogy. The Russian mafia/Yukos/corruption was done as the USSR folded. It is only just now that Putin is trying to clean up the mess left by Yeltsin.

Yes I read it badly, now is OK because before I was surprised that you like him

Brzezinski once said - "now that the USSR has fallen, the only remaining enemy of the west is the Orthodox church".

If he really said something like this, it was very foolish. You know my opinion about catolicism and Orthodox, that it is exactly the same. Well fortunately we in Poland don’t have similar problems.

(The orange banners are Yushchenko's)

Viktor Yushchenko is probably the lessor of all evils, most heavily favored by "reformers".

Yanukovich - who probably ordered the hit - is the hand-picked successor to Leonid Kuchma. Both of them are Chicago-style politicos. While Yanukovich was governor of the ethnic Russian Donbass region, he had close ties to the gangster Anatoly Pavlovich Ryadchenko. When a judge was investigating the murder of an anti-Kuchma journalist, Yanukovich was supposedly taped ordered a pair of broken knees for the judge.

A stopped clock is right twice a day, since Soros supports Yushchenko. It should be interesting to see what my email from Kyiv looks like.

One of those governors that was elected.

Thanks for the feedback but anything, anything but Soros. I really despise him, stopped clock and all.

Ever since I read about his funding of the hospice (euthanasia) for children project in New York, I just cannot make an excuse for Soros to remain on this planet with the rest of us. He was supporting sending sick children to hospices set up specially for them to die in, rather than hospitals which are expensive but support life. Somehow he missed the fact that many children with leukemia are actually cured and live long lives.

I wonder if this is somehow related to Russia's pending war on terror...?

Uzhas, chto tvoritsya za portfel' prezidenta. Ehto i ne udivitel'no. Ved' Kuchma i ego okruzhenie teryayut vse. V strane idet otkrytiy grabezh. Prodayutsya predpriyatiya, kotorye predstavlyayut bol'shoy interes. Tsena ikh nizhe, chem oni poluchili pribyl'. I skupaet vse ehto priblizhennye Kuchmy i ego zyat'. "I'm of the opinion that they tried to poison him (Yushchenko). He was travelling around the Cherkassaya district with his campaign and went to a hospital, because he thought he had a cold. Such were his symptoms. But, when they performed tests, it turns out that it was a serious case of poisoning. He was hopitalized, but he's already recovered. In my opinion, it was a warning. It's horrible what goes on beyond the president's portfolio (?). It's not even surprising. Obviously Kuchma and his circle will lose everything. There's open theft going on in the nation. They'ree selling companies which represent a large interest. Their prices are lower then their profits. And all these businesses are being bought be Kuchma and his son-in-law. Therefore there will be a dirty struggle and it will dangerous for Yushchenko's life."

I'm not sure what the portfolio part means, but it looks like Ukraine is getting interesting.

It's rather KGB, not Kuchma.
