Kerrys pit bull: Ted K comes to the rescue - again
WASHINGTON - Sen. Edward M. Kennedy [related, bio] is riding to John F. Kerry's rescue again, hitting the trail to blast President Bush [related, bio] in hopes of jolting Kerry's slumping campaign back to life.
Kennedy - who propped up Kerry with appearances in Iowa, New Hampshire and Wisconsin when the junior senator ran aground during the primary season earlier this year - will campaign across the country starting in Pennsylvania this week.
He's also planning a behind-the-scenes fund-raising and political organizing effort.
``George Bush knows he can't win the argument if he talks about John Kerry's actual proposals, so he resorts to these tired old labels that are designed to deceive and frighten,'' Kennedy fumed yesterday. ``The Bush record: failure. The Bush response: fear and smear.''
The Democratic party's most powerful liberal voice will take sharp aim at Bush in Pennsylvania Friday as a waffler who leaves a trail of broken promises on everything from education to jobs to health care.
``George Bush has offered the same politics of fear and smear that is his standard response whenever he can't defend his own record,'' Kennedy said. ``With this president, the buck always stops somewhere else. There's a reason that the president can't defend his record. It's because there is no good record to defend.''
Bush strategists doubt that Kennedy, the liberal conservatives despise most, can help Kerry win moderate swing voters that are the key to the race. But Kennedy can help boost Democratic turnout, a key factor.
Pennsylvania, a key battleground state where the Catholic vote is substantial, is among a string of states across the country where Kennedy, 72, will seek to rally Democrats behind Kerry.
Past relations between the two Bay State senators and their aides have sometimes been strained, but sources say the pair have put aside differences to wage this battle for the White House.
``Sen. Kennedy will do everything he can over the next seven weeks to help John Kerry [related, bio],'' said Kennedy spokesman David Smith yesterday. ``This is something we have been planning to do all along.''
The Kerry camp hopes Kennedy, who was perhaps the most prominent Democratic critic of Bush's Iraq war, to help Kerry counter charges he's flip-flopped positions on Iraq.
Kerry had hoped to have former President Bill Clinton help whip up support among Democrats, but Clinton's recent heart surgery is expected to keep him off the campaign trail.
``Kennedy will help to fill that void,'' said a Kerry source.
Kennedy and Bush forged a fast friendship when Bush first took office, hoping to team up for legislative success on domestic issues.
But Kennedy has accused Bush of failing to adequately fund his major education bill, the No Child Left Behind Act, and the four-decade senator, has since become one of Bush's fiercest critics.
Teddy to the rescue...heh...there's some irony there...
Teddy to the rescue......... this attempt at a rescue will end the same way Mary Jo's did.....I dont know one person who respects this blowhard.... they are really getting desperate...
LOL! That's right senator, fire up that base......and alienate all the moderate democrats across the country.
That term reminds me of the old kids game with the rhyming name....smear the queer.
Johnny can be the queer. Ted's just the swimmer.
That's too repulsive to think about.
By the way, Goodbye to the phony "assult weapons" ban.
Ta...ta..dum dum. End Kerry.
Unfrozen Caveman Senator
I think I spelled assuault incorrectly. But what the hell? It's late and I'm happy about it.
Watch for the old blowhard to blow his top and drop dead on the stump. Then he can hook up with John Edwards for a voter registration from hell.
Jeez, I certainly hope the doctor ordered it cooked at at LEAST 170 degrees.
Reading the headline, I honestly thought the reference was to Ted Koppell.
Get with the times, man.
The base must really be in trouble, between the Kerry campaign sending out Gore and Kennedy, and all the advertising aimed at black voters.
Teddy the troll is a pathetic old drunk.
Just what the sinking Kerry campaign needed, THE expert in sinking. The U-Boat commander will have those deck chairs rearranged in no time!
