Crane was up for a major post in 2000 if I recall, with the reshuffling of the chairmanships. I think it was Budget head. But he was passed over at the time for a much more moderate Republican. I recall National Review being up in arms.
I believe it was Ways and Means, and his alcoholism was given as the reason why he was passed over for Bill Thomas of CA.
