Today, the once proud CBS News organization theatens to collapse under an attack clearly unanticipated by Dan Rather and his editorial colleagues, who vetted and pased on to the public as genuine, documents purported to have been typed in the early 1970's, but which exactly match the output of Microsoft Word in their spacing, superscript, apostrophe design, and other typographical influences.
The world of mass media may have forever changed on 9/9/04.
It took less than one full day for the blogosphere to fully vet the purported memos from Lt. Killian, George W. Bush's superior in the Texas National Guard, far more throughly than CBS News was able to accomplish in weeks.
The blogosphere never sleeps. The old heirarchical editoral structure, with highly paid journalists looking over potentially explosive evidence, and calling up few people in order to check, was left in the dust by the new interactive, dispersed, fully networked reality of internet vetting.
This phenomenon stands on its head the old bromide purveyed by the elitsts of the old media, to the effect that the only reliable news comes from sources which employ editors, which are staffed by 'real journalists' who adhere to strict standards of scrutiny.

I am proud to say that I cancelled my subscription to our local newspaper over a year ago and haven't missed it a bit.
CBS said they had the documents for 6 weeks and yet they were debunked in a few hours. So much for journalism.
You know, of course, that the first thing the drooling bassett and his minions will do if they ever regain majority power will be to attempt to control the net.

How very true this is. They can't get away with it anymore. They are getting caught and their scheme's and bias is being reported in the new media so the public is being made aware as well.
I think this is just beginning to dawn on them, but they don't fully have it yet. The example of the false AP story on the "Boos" at the Bush Ralley that never existed and the fall out from that should have been a huge wake-up for them.
great piece, thanks for posting.
Its even hard to watch local news except for the weather because at FR you are so far ahead of the game already!
Interesting article, thanks for posting.
It should read that Free Republic never sleeps.
Open Source Investigative Reporting (OSIR) will prove to be either the downfall of the MSM, or provide the needed competition it hasn't had in decades to bring the media back to real reporting versus liberal shilling.
I did the same thing to the Houston Chronicle a couple of years ago and don't miss it one bit. Then again they keep throwing it so maybe that's why I don't miss it. They must need to keep their circulation numbers up.
Jason Blair, NBC and Volvo tests, ANG and Lt. Bush, Duranty and REDS, Washington Post and kids in the ghetto; recent CNN/Gallup poll revealed that only 36% of the American people trust the news they read, see and hear and these stories tells why!!
"I am proud to say that I cancelled my subscription to our local newspaper over a year ago"
Ditto that. Why give $$ to the enemy? I want them out of business and I let them know that every thime they call begging for me to subscribe.
They've called me several times and I tell them that their editorial page was so pathetic that I gave up the subscription and, no, I would not ever consider reordering it again.
"BlatherGate: Dan goes docuMENTAL!"
you realize of course that even CNN is reporting on this... maybe it's a new day for them... probably not.
Screw the "blogosphere". It was FREE REPUBLIC who exposed this fraud you doofus! We don't need no stinkin' "blogosphere". (what a stupid term anyway)
Ratings rule, so even whilst CNN realises this is bad news for Kerry they're also very keen to grab some of CBS's market share. Like a hyena that's gone lame, they'll turn on each other.
The Old Media is dead. Long live the New Media.
