CNN Now Questioning Authenticity of Bush Documents (Authenticity of Bush Guard memos questioned)
CNN.com ^ | 9/10/04 | special report

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Questions are being raised about the authenticity of newly unearthed memos which asserted that George W. Bush ignored an order from a superior officer in the Texas Air National Guard and lost his status as a pilot because he failed to meet military performance standards and undergo a required physical exam. CBS, which reported on the memos on its "60 Minutes" program, said its experts who examined the documents concluded that they were authentic. They ostensibly were written by Lt. Col. Jerry Killian, one of Bush's commanders in 1972 and 1973. But Killian's son, one of Killian's fellow officers and an independent document examiner questioned the memos. Gary Killian, who served in the Guard with his father and retired as a captain in 1991, said he doubted his father would have written an unsigned memo which said there was pressure to "sugar coat" Bush's performance review. "It just wouldn't happen," he said. "No officer in his right mind would write a memo like that." The personnel chief in Killian's unit at the time also said he believes the documents are fake. "They looked to me like forgeries," said Rufus Martin. "I don't think Killian would do that, and I knew him for 17 years." Killian died in 1984.

..However, they milked the original story for all it was worth... Last night they kept repeating the 60 minutes alligations over and over, while the other nets were talking about the docs being false..

Gary Killian, son of Lt. Col. Jerry Killian, will be on Fox News at the top of the hour. (Noon EDT / 9:00 PDT).

He was supposed to have been on about 45 minutes ago. My hunch is he's making the newsroom rounds this morning and has not made it over to Fox yet.

This is new.

Dan Rather should resign or be fired !!

CBS news should fire Dan Rather for not being absolutely positively certain of the authenticity of these forged documents. We are in the absolute final leg of a Presidential election and Dan Rather rushed to press to get these dociuments on the air because he thought it would potentially help Kerry and hurt Bush. He is blinded by his partisanship and is not fit to be a journalist.

Dan Rather never even looked into where these papers came from. It was his job to be CERTAIN of their authenticity. It's fitting that Rather's career comes to an end under this cloud of his extremist partisanship. He will always be remembered for this. His legacy will be fitting....a reporter who would lie to America if it supported his Left Wing Ideology.

I think Mr. Martin's comments came out at least this morning on Fox & Friends (reported by them, not Mr. Martin saying it).

The forensic evidence is real strong though. The personal testimony is icing on the cake, but on its own wouldn't be enough.

I'm actually surprised the major networks didn't jump on CBS quicker. Ratings and competition mean more to these people than politics.

Then again, if (when) CBS goes down the drain they must realize that they could be next so CBS must be protected.
