Democrats Step Up Attack on Bush Guard Record
The Washington Post ^ | 9/10/2004 | Jim VandeHei and Thomas B. Edsall

Democrats unleashed a multi-front attack yesterday on President Bush's National Guard service, as the two political parties escalated a deeply personal fight over the Vietnam War-era activities of both presidential candidates.

The Democratic National Committee -- with the support of John F. Kerry's top campaign advisers -- joined several liberal groups in asserting that Bush lied about fulfilling his National Guard duties and exploited family ties to dodge combat during the Vietnam War. The DNC is lining up veterans to condemn Bush's action, while a group called Texans for Truth will air a new ad Monday alleging that Bush failed to show up for guard duty. "The president lied when he said he did not receive preferential treatment and when he said he fulfilled his duty," the DNC's Howard Wolfson said.

Republicans are planning to fire back with a more intense attack on Kerry's antiwar protests during the early 1970s, when he conveyed stories of atrocities by U.S. troops to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and tossed war ribbons at the White House lawn.

The anti-Kerry Swift Boat Veterans for Truth is spending nearly $700,000 on a new ad that asks, "How can the man who renounced his country's symbols now be trusted?" House Republicans are stepping up the criticism of Kerry after four lawmakers viewed a new documentary by POWs that blames Kerry's words for years of emotional and physical torture. "It's pretty powerful," said Rep. Steve Buyer (R-Ind.) after viewing the film.

Story over, forged documents. Yeah, that wasn't the whole story, but welcome to politics, suckers.

From what I have seen, the plan which has been orchestrated between the Democrats and CBS is rolling out as scheduled, despite the evidence that the CBS-60 Minutes premise is bogus. Harkin was the first to take the stage on queue, despite the fact that he has just finished any credibility he might have held. Soon he will go down in history with the likes of Willie Horton.

One more quote:
Kerry is trying to keep a safe public distance from the attacks, aides say, although in a midnight speech in Ohio minutes after Bush concluded his convention speech a week ago, Kerry went after Bush for his National Guard service and Vice President Cheney for not serving at all.
Oh yeah, like we're supposed to believe that all of this isn't coordinated. I think Susan Estrogen with her loose lips signaled what was coming down the road.

You know, WHO REALLY CARES what he did that many years ago? I am so sick of this smear by Kerry, if that is all he's got, that's pathetic.

G.W. has been in the White House for almost 4 years, so WHO cares, it didn't matter til now??????? NOT!

G-d I love it when the old media is still firing at a ghost, while they've already been stabbed in the back by their friends at the DNC.

The view from up above is that the political campaign at this point for President is about winning the hearts and minds of the moderate un-decideds.

Slinging mud only works in such situations if it sticks and the moderate undecideds say "ugh, I can't vote for somebody like that!"

To the extent that many media outlets are now indicating that the basis of the CBS story is fake documents and to the extent that Stolen Valor gets any media attension, the moderate will think that Kerry is more sleezy than Bush. This one has backfired for the Dem's and especially the Carville Clinton backroom slimes.

Hearts and minds will not be won and folks expecially main stream media will be a little more reluctant. I expect that Dan Rather will be taken to the woodshed by CBS brass and not come back again with any hatchet jobs for a year or two.

It would be important to know who is behind these forgeries? Whose idea, who paid, who actually drafted the documents, who arranged the signatures , etc. Does it go to the highest levels of the Democratic party and the Kerry campaign? Is it the news agency - first it was AP and now CBS? The public deserves to know. It needs to know.

I watched Brit Hume's show this evening, the consensus was that if the missed physical was due to drugs or alcohol use, that would be a huge problem for the Bush campaign. Otherwise, all of the information was already known in one way or another.

And I'm with you. After reading Byron York's articles over the post few years about President Bush's service in the ANG, he served and was discharged honorably. Case closed for me.

I was away from the news for a few days, working nights. I understand this story originated on 60 Minutes. I dont watch CBS news at all anymore and would like to know who advertises on 60 minutes to voice my complaints.

As the Good Book puts it: "As a dog returneth to his vomit, so a fool returneth to his folly."

This is all plowed ground and will assuredly create more problems for the dems than they can use just now. But then again, no one ever thought them guilty of being quick to learn. Their assumption is that anyone stupid enough to elect sick willy twice must be beyond redemption and easy prey.I must admit, it is tempting but not even the most dim witted is willing to buy into gigilo john and the breck boy.

There's also some information on the American Spectator site that makes a connection. Kerry is a stupid desperate man right now.

Back in the 70's they didn't do drug tests. Bush could have shown up stoned out of his mind and it wouldn't have made a difference [hyperbole].

And it's only going to get worse.

Remember, last week I told you all that if Bush's polls held, Kerry would go nuclear.

Yep, I sure remember. I don't know why I continue to be startled by what the Dems will stoop to to win. And I think that Susan Estrogen gave the warning last week about what was going to happen.

I've also heard that there the dirt is going to be dumped on Laura Bush as well. Almost sixty more days of this stuff left to go...

And I think that when Kerry loses, there is going to be hell to pay from the Dems. The victory had better be more than a slim spread, but I think they are going to lose it big-time.
