AMSTERDAM There has never been a greater need for strong leadership in the White House, Diana Kerry said in Amsterdam Sunday as she rallied support for her brother, Democratic presidential hopeful John Kerry.
Avoiding commenting on the specific policies her brother might pursue if elected the 44th US president, Diana Kerry took every opportunity to urge US citizens living overseas to register in time to vote on 2 November.
Diana Kerry, 57, is chairwoman of Americans Overseas for Kerry (AOKerry.com) and is visiting several cities in Europe to promote the registration website www.overseasvote2004.com.
She was in Amsterdam on Sunday with AOKerry executive Jim Brenner at the invitation of the local Democrats Abroad branch.
Asked what kind of president John Kerry would be for US expats, she told Expatica: "We lived overseas when we were younger and John understands the enormous contribution of US citizens overseas in terms of business and America's reputation."
Diana Kerry, who has worked as a teacher overseas for many years, said she thought her brother could make the world safer for expats in light of the threat of international terrorism.
"The sad thing is America had the goodwill of the international community after the September 11 terror attacks, but this was squandered by the present administration in just three years."
"I think John Kerry would be a different type of leader, willing to work with other countries to defeat the terrorists," she said.
She said her brother was a patriot who had been decorated for his service in Vietnam, before joining the anti-war movement because he felt the American involvement in Vietnam was wrong.
Asked if he as President would go to war to protect Americans from terrorism, she replied: "He will do what is necessary."
She presided at the European launch of the website in Munich earlier this month. She has also visited London to rally support for her brother among the estimated 260,000 American citizens living in the UK.
During a press conference in Amsterdam, Diana Kerry emphasised that the 2004 election was "probably the most important presidential election in our lifetime."
Asked why this was the case, she said George Bush had the worst record on jobs since President Herbert Hoover (1929-1933). She also said terror and national security policies needed a new direction, adding "I think this is John Kerry's time."
When pressed on specifics of policy an administration might follow, Diana Kerry and Brenner were less forthcoming,
When questioned whether Kerry would alter the current US policy of staunch support for Israel in relation to the Palestinian issue, Brenner replied: "Democrats Abroad in Israel are holding a meeting on Monday evening and you should get your affiliates there to ask them that question."

Isn't this illegal?
Last I checked, attempting to influence the politics of another nation, while still a private citizen of the United States is illegal.. Unless issued proper credentials by our government.
What she is doing constitutes treason. It must run in the family.
" ... Kerry, who has worked overseas as a teacher for many years ... "
Dubya didn't have much of a chance for the teachers' vote. Expats who are teachers are probably just as liberal as they are stateside. No loss.
That's funny...Kerry needs more votes so where does he send his daughter...to the Netherlands for pete's sake....Yeah like the Dutch will provide the swing votes necessary for Kerry to win!
Who won the Netherlands in the last election? |
Oops my mistake, she was talking to expatriates....(kicks own self in shin)
What runs in this family is a pro-European, anti-American streak that runs a mile wide.
If Diana had her way, the people of Europe would be able to cast valid votes for our President...and a few "moderate" republicRats like Powell as well.
They are trying to win the expat vote. Nonmilitary citizens living overseas. How desperate do you have to be? We can't have more than a million or so, excluding military. Maybe trying to get them to register in swing states...
Check out the John F. Kerry Timeline. Email it to your friends.

So it wasn't Amsterdam, NY?
I only go to Amsterdam for two things, getting laid and/or getting stoned.
The guys she's talking to will fill out their absentee ballots, but they'll forget to mail them.
What are the rules for ex-pats voting while overseas? Is it just based on your word that you are an American citizen? If so, I can see millions of supposed French "ex-pats" flooding the ballot box for Kerry.
LOL! Proper editing and condensening is essential to the understanding of written communication.
You did Good.
No biggie.
The expat vote breaks the same way overseas as it would if the expats were back in the U.S. Teachers, NGOs, journos, and similar types will go for Kerry; engineers, businessmen, etc. will go for Bush (not to mention the military vote, which isn't really "expat").
This AOKerry group is preaching to the converted, they just want to make sure everyone gets their absentee ballot sent on time.
You have to be properly registered in your home state to use an absentee ballot.
Well, at least she's looking in the right place. Given how many "coffeehouses" there are in Amsterdam, that ought to be a target-rich environment for the left-wing stoner vote.
