Miller's Blast May Not Endear Swing Voters, John McCain Says (Shut Up Alert!)
Houston Chronicle ^ | 9/3/04

Sen. John McCain, who has pushed for civility in this years presidential race, is warning that the biting attack on Senator John Kerry by a fellow Democrat at the Republican National Convention on Wednesday night might harm President Bush's efforts to woo swing voters.

McCain said that the keynote address by Senator Zell Miller, (D-GA) could prove as controversial as a speech by Patrick J. Buchanan at the 1992 GOP Convention in Houston.

'I think it backfires,' McCain said of Miller's rhetorical assault on Kerry.

He added that 'It makes Pat Buchanan's speech..look milquetoast.'

McCain made his comments to reporters at a party he hosted after the convention's Wednesday session ended.

Former Nixon advisor Buchanan's speech--in which he declared a 'culture war' was underway in America--was thought by many Republicans to have hurt the re-election of Bush's father, then President George H.W. Bush.

McCain is eaten up with jealousy. He cannot stand anyone getting more press than he.

I cannot find one redeeming quality about John McCain. The very thought of him as the 2008 Republican candidate, as some are speculating, makes me sick.

Hubby was out taking a smoke-break with some coworkers, including some non-smokers. One of 'em, a liberal, began telling the gathered about how he and his wife thought Zell's speech was nuts. One of the other folks outside then said, "I thought it was great!" I have no idea what his political affiliation is. Hubby just grinned and nodded his agreement with the second guy, and he acknowledged that he had liked Zell since the first time he ever heard him when Zell was governor of Georgia. I do not know if there were "swing voters" present in the smoke-break crowd. I don't know if I know any swing voters at all.

My liberal in-laws told hubby and I last week that "George W. Bush is the best thing that's ever happened to this country." That is HUGE in my opinion. These are folks who voted for Carter and Mondale and Dukakis. (they voted for Perot over Clinton both times.) Hubby and I were close to choking on our food or even fallin' off our chairs at the dinner table when my father-in-law said this. When my mother-in-law clarified, "Well, next to Ronald Reagan," hubby and I were literally stunned into silence. (this is a rare occurrence for hubby. When he is silent, it is because he is extremely angry or asleep.) As soon as hubby and I were alone, I asked him what had happened to his parents. We've been wondering ever since if some aliens abducted them and replaced them with Republicans. They think John Kerry is the biggest dufus to be nominated by the Democrats in a loooooooooong time.

McCain ain't the sharpest knife in the drawer. He came close to flunking out of the Naval Academy, during pilot training he was pushed thru ... given a waiver twice during aviation training, allowed to proceed in the program when others would have washed out ... McCain's
grandfather and dad were former Navy admirals. McCain is rarely right about anything and he's wrong about Zel Miller. McCain is your quintessential "hotdog"... nothing more.

McCain is full of it. I know two people personally who will vote for GWB because of Zell's speech. It brought it home!
