SUVA, Fiji (AP) - The wreck of a World War II U.S. fighter plane has been found in the wild center of Fiji by a pig hunter, police said Wednesday.
The villager from the central highlands of Fiji's main island of Viti Levu was hunting wild pigs when he stumbled across the wreckage, said police spokesman Mesake Koroi.
He said the hunter first found an ammunition belt, then other pieces of plane wreckage.
Koroi said the wreckage was believed to be from a U.S. fighter that took off from Nadi Airport in western Viti Levu in early 1942 and disappeared in the jungle-covered mountains.
The identity of the pilot was not immediately available.
Fiji was a major WWII base for U.S. forces preparing to attack Japanese invaders in the Solomon Islands and Kiribati.
Koroi said two police teams were traveling to the area Wednesday to secure the wreckage and to dispose of any live ammunition and bombs at the site.
Police said U.S. Embassy officials in Suva were informed of the find.
This man was a lost hero. I hope that his family will now achieve some measure of peace.
The timing is suspect.
Most likely an Arkanside. Where was Clinton?
You mean Kerry just left him there to die?
So they actually recovered human remains? I saw a thread on this yesterday, but there was no mention of recovery of a body.
