(Democrat) Protester gets within 10 feet of Cheney

An anti-war protester posing as a GOP volunteer at the Republican National Convention got within 10 feet of Vice President Dick Cheney last night as the college student shouted anti-Bush insults.

According to the Associated Press, Secret Service Agent Shannon Zeigler said Cheney "was never in any harm or danger" during the incident at Madison Square Garden.

The 21-year-old Yale student, Thomas Frampton, reportedly was carrying a "Bush-Cheney '04" sign behind Cheney's box at about 9:30 p.m. After being told by security to keep moving the man turned toward Cheney and began shouting anti-war statements. According to AP, he then started to climb over a low wall separating Cheney's box from the walkway and got within 10 feet of the vice president before Secret Service agents tried to restrain him.

Court papers say the suspect swung his elbow at agents as they took control of him and continued to shout at Cheney as he was dragged away and cuffed.

A federal prosecutor says Frampton went through a GOP volunteer-training program and had convention passes and a volunteer shirt, which he was ordered to return.

According to the report, Frampton was released on $50,000 bail and told to stay 100 feet from Cheney and President Bush.

AP quotes defense attorney Henry E. Mazurek as describing Frampton as a model citizen and Yale junior with a near-perfect grade-point average. The protester was scheduled to start the new school year tomorrow.

Funny, the New York Post says this clown has a history of anti-war protests.

Too bad they couldn't hold him until after the convention... He sounds like the type who would be back with a gun.

You know... the anonymous demonstrator that suddenly gets into the news. Next he wants to make a bigger splash, and he acquires a gun or something more dangerous... domestic terrorism. Someone keep an eye on him.

Has anyone else noted that Cheney doesn't look so good. I can't put my finger on it, but he seems to move less, he looks pained or something. It is quite striking to me but while his color and health seem as robust as ever, he seems not up to par.

They sure had that lawyer ready in the wings, didn't they?

Like they were waiting or something.

You know, none of these protestors wear deodorant. Only a handful shower regularly.

Shouldn't this fellow's BO have prompted someone to question whether he belonged there?

Frampton's daddy is a former Clinton official who just happens to be in the same law firm as David Boies. If they were Republicans, the Times would have a Web of Connections chart ready to go.

And Medea Benjamin, of Code Pink, was the one who snuck into the Garden tonight to harass Cheney. Very disturbing.

No, there were two different protestors who bothered Cheney on two different nights. I'm really stunned that Medea Benjamin was able to make it through -- you'd think somebody would have recognized her first.

When Fox News reported it, they said it was a woman. I just KNEW then it was her. It sounded too much like the crap she usually pulls. She said she gained access through a "friend of a friend's" floor pass. I can only imagine that it's someone in the media.

Medea Benjamin, 51, of the peace group Code Pink, said she unveiled a banner near Cheney that read "Be Pro Life, Stop the Killing in Iraq" last night.

Benjamin, of San Francisco, said she borrowed "a friend of a friend's" floor pass to gain access to the Garden.

She said the veep forced a smile as she yelled, "Mr. Cheney, how much money did Halliburton make in Iraq?"

I noticed. It's causing me concern.

He does look healthy enough. He looks almost sad.

DOn't! He's just brainwashed by years of liberal indoctrination. Unfortunately, he's too far gone to ever turn back.

I do not think this is his health I think is OK there but it may be the constant snipes or his handlers maybe very nervous probably the latter. I think he has the ability to shake off any critisium but maybe his handlers are very nervous and do not like him moving too much; this is probably very frustrating to him and hence why on just a few ocassions he looks a little troubled. On the whole though I think he looks good and will continue to go forward with vigor for another 4 years.

I agree I think it is not a sadness for him because once he gets into his speech and talking to people and interacting with Lynne he perks up I think it is a general sadness for the way society is going.
