Bush sets bait, reels in helpless Kerry

ZEV CHAFETS

Everybody knows President Bush is a bass fisherman. But the president has spent most of August reeling in a more exotic specimen: the Giant New England Slack-Jaw.

Years from now, when tales of the catch are told around GOP campfires, small boys will marvel at how the supposedly intelligent Kerryfish swallowed Bush's bait, hook, line and sinker.

Slack-jaw season started in January, when John Kerry won the Iowa caucuses with help from a band of Vietnam character witnesses. At the time, Bush realized three simple truths:

1) Kerry would be his Democratic opponent. 2) The theme of Kerry's campaign would be his heroic military service. 3) Kerry would fund his campaign largely with so-called 527 soft money put up by anti-Bush billionaires who had been flirting with Howard Dean.

Yes, with Kerry's "sucker bet" of his 4 months' Vietnam experience (which, of course, includes the clinging baggage of his trashing of the military upon his return)against the POTUS's "full house" of 4 years as Commander in Chief, Kerry is fast losing his chips.

I love the last sentence. "You just have to be smarter than the fish."

It is clear that when it comes to political tactics and strategy, Bush is much smarter than Kerry.

Why does the source say "NY Daily News" when the link is to "Myrtle Beach Online"?

Kerry had a real dilemma....he could NEVER run on his 20 yr record in the senate...so he figured AH....well I set myself up, with his sociopath lying about NAM, I'll run on that. Americans are so stupid anyway and will never catch me. Besides I did a really good job making myself look like a war hero even though I was only in Nam 4 months with self inflicted wounds, and all those metals to top it off.

Well you have now been proven to be a stupid idoit....Kerry the Fairy. And on top of that...you have been proven to be a CHICKEN at heart.

Very nice piece. I hope the author stays safe from TS Gaston so we can read more.

Well, the facts are that for 30 years, Kerry got away
with this basic fraud, but with only John O'Neill
nipping at his heels.

Evidently, Kerry's arrogance would not permit him to
consider that running for President would cause a
swarm of Swifties to rise and smite him. Or if he
considered it, he figured he could handle it.

Haven't heard a peep out of Herman Munster so far
this weekend. Isn't today (Sun) the day he was
rumored to be offering the Vietnam "apology"?

The libs have just gotten so used to a highly partisan media coveing for them that it took them by surprise. They're still trying to figure out how to run a campaign in a free and open society.

Had he stayed in Mass. politics, he would have gotten away indefinitely. But it doesn't work on a national level, not with states full of people who don't give the dem lever a lobotomized pull.

He's so smart, he never saw it coming. Here's my favorite line regarding the swiftvets though: "IT'S NOT FAIR!"

Regarding an apology, were I a Vietnam veteran, it would only make me madder since it would be obvious that he's merely apologizing to try and get a boost in the polls.

That's a fact...however now when it MOST needed John O'Neill has finally got him, and got him real good!!! God Bless that fellow Houstonian.

> Regarding an apology, were I a Vietnam veteran,

Well, the Swifties have made it clear that the only
"apology" that would cause them to stand down would
have to include Kerry's withdrawal from the presidential
race. We can guess how likely that is.

So the question then becomes: what is Kerry going to
apologize for, and to whom, and to what end?

I agree with your sentiment that almost nothing he
can say will sway any vet votes his way. He could
lose even more. You can imagine the response of
leftover VVAW members if Kerry apologizes for the
Fullbright lies, or the Paris treason.

So, I'm sure they're busily focus-group testing
various mea culpas, and discovering that NONE
cause a net increase in votes for Kerry, except
amoung the complete-idiot voters (but they already
have them sewn up).
