Well, not only that, but this casualty rate is always brought up by folks like Juan in the most breathless, hyperventilating terms, as if it has never happened before. At this rate, 1,000 deaths in Iraq in not quite 18 months, it will take us -- even if we round up to 700 to killed per year to give the Juan-ites the benefit of the doubt -- it will take us another 82 years to catch up with Vietnam, and another 570 years for WWII, and 856 years to catch up with the Civil War.
I don't mean to demean this loss of life (my brother may be headed over there soon anyway) but this is a pretty low casualty rate.
700 is the approximate number of murders in Chicago in a good year.
