SV's calendar girls: Women in Republican group playfully pose for fund-raiser

SIERRA VISTA - Some people may think Republican women are proper and prim.

Well, maybe not - at least around this Southern Arizona city.

While a dozen Thunder Mountain Republican Women leaders didn't bare it all, they did show portions of tantalizing skin for a 2005 calendar shoot.

Gene Bodeen, the club's recording secretary, said she had the initial idea of doing the calendar and was surprised that others in the organization wanted to participate. She said there were enough women wanting to do it to fill up more than 12 months.

The discreetly bawdy calendar idea is not new. It has it roots in a successful British program of a group of women who posed sans clothing, using objects to strategically hide their upper body parts. The success of the calendar sales in England and around the world raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for leukemia research.

The Thunder Mountain Republican Women also hope to raise money, with half the profits going to the Fort Huachuca Chaplains Fund to purchase phone cards for soldiers being deployed to places such as Iraq.

There is nothing to indicate in the calendar that the chaplains have put their imprimatur on the project.

Like the women from England, those posing in the local GOP calendar are mature ladies.

It would be fair to say that the models for the 2005 calendar easily fall within the same age group of their British sisters - 45 to 65. As the old cliché goes: "Courage is the better part of valor."

It probably is true none of the women in the Republican calendar will find themselves on the front page or in the centerfold of Playboy.

However, they said they did have fun posing almost au naturel.

There is a trade secret, which will not be revealed, as to how they posed for photographer Ed Bottomley. There was no technical manipulation, just a sensible decision made. As our British cousins might say, it was a swimmingly good idea.

The undercovering - pun intended - of the calendar took place on Aug. 21 at a GOP event in Sierra Vista.

The biggest part of the women's ploy was to keep their husbands in the dark. It was a success.

Helen Manring, Miss April, said she would just tell her husband, Gene, she had some Republican activity to go to.

"She's always going somewhere, so I didn't think anything unusual was going on," he said.

When the women's secret was revealed to their spouses, the men were surprised and shocked to know their wives were willing to entice others to pay to see them in tame but suggestively naughty poses.

Sierra Vista Mayor Pro Tem Bob Strain, whose wife, Jane, the calendar's Miss February, said he was buying a number of the calendars - at $20 a pop.

Bodeen, Miss June, said only 100 calendars were put together in the initial run. She hopes there will be people who will want them, even for the value of a good laugh, and other runs will be done.

Others who may be seen in the flesh are:

€ Jo Ann Gaffen, Miss January

€ Enid Reinhart, Miss March

€ Dot Greener, Miss May

€ Marina Rennebaum, Miss July

€ Viji Winter, Miss August

€ Eva Dickerson, Miss September

€ Tracy Thomas, Miss October

€ Jane Gonseth and Sandie Davis, sharing honors as Miss November

All of the women appear in the December portion.

be glad it wasn't the Democratic women's club that did it; they give a whole new meaning the phrase "shiver ugly."

"Courage is the better part of valor."

I think it's actually "Discretion is the better part of valor."

Being a little precipitous are we?

How can you tell from looking at a postage stamp?

Older girls have their own charm.
