George McGovern is one of the most affable politicians I've ever met. Talking with him before a recent event in Sarasota, he was unassuming and modest with humor that doesn't stray far from self-deprecation.
The former U.S. senator and 1972 Democratic presidential candidate is just flat-out likeable.
But make no mistake, McGovern is full-throttle on board with the Democratic playbook to take out George W. Bush, disappointingly repeating every discreditable charge in the partisan manual.
McGovern is on a book tour, touting his new work, "The Essential America: Our Founders and the Liberal Tradition." In it, he promotes the idea that the country is built on two philosophic pillars, conservatism and liberalism.
"There's nothing wrong with being a conservative. We need that," he told 300 people at the event sponsored by the liberal Forum 2004 organization.
But not the kind of conservatism in power today. He pines for the conservatism of Wendell Willkie -- basically the blue-blood conservatism that stayed in the back pew and always lost. Loser conservatism.
You can't blame him for being a loyal Democrat and self-confessed, unabashed liberal. Interestingly, perhaps because he is not running for office, he eschews the eschewing of the "liberal" label, poking fun at those who hide behind terms such as "pragmatic progressive."
He believes traditional liberals should be proud of their philosophy. But as with conservatism, his recipe of high-minded, Jeffersonian liberalism is far different tasting from the shrill abortion-on-demand, special-rights-for-gays, socialistic redistribution heart of today's liberalism.
He talks of politics "devoid of a moral basis" as being a hazardous enterprise; he refers to the King James Bible repeatedly; he wants the Constitution protected at all costs -- pretty conservative sounding.
Listening to him is like stepping into a time machine and going back 50 years -- until he starts talking about President Bush. Then, he is definitely reading the most recent Democratic strategy book.
He attacked Bush's intelligence: "I would be satisfied with a president of reasonable intelligence."
He attacked Bush's Iraq War motives: "We went in because the president told us there were weapons of mass destruction aimed at the U.S. There were no weapons of mass destruction."
He ridiculed Bush for praying about going to war, and for Bush referring to God as his "Father in heaven" -- which is a traditionally and Biblically understood Christian appellation for God. "That worries me," McGovern said.
And finally, he blames Bush's post 9/11 foreign policy for other countries hating us and, amazingly enough, blames Bush for young Arab males hating us to the point of suicide attacks.
These are boilerplate criticisms of the president, straight out of the handbook of liberal 527 organizations that are flourishing under the miserably failed "campaign finance reform." And worse, the charges are easily refuted in a few words.
Regarding Bush's intelligence, say what you will, Harvard does not give out MBAs to dummies.
WMDs were always only part of the reason for going into Iraq. Other reasons included Saddam's support of terrorists, his refusal to abide by United Nations resolutions, and being a self-stated enemy of the United States. As a byproduct, we got to free a nation from oppression -- something traditional liberals used to applaud.
As for Bush making Arabs hate us, he was in office nine months before 9/11, and we had numerous terrorist attacks during the '90s. 'Nuff said.
And then, this respectable elder statesman, in his congenial way, went off the deep end.
If Bush is re-elected, he says the country will return to the military draft and will invade Iran and Syria and other Arab nations on the hit list of the so-called neo-conservatives.
McGovern proudly says: "I'm out now working for John Kerry."
That was sadly all too evident.
As for McGovern, he not only drank the Dem's Kool-Aid-- he's one of the originals who helped mix it up in the pitcher!
George McGovern was a bonehead in 1972 and he still is.
They are being made by a fellow FReeper disabled vet who has a bone to pick with Kerry, like we all do!
Large $20 (24" Wide 12" Tall) like mine
Small $10 (12" Wide 6" Tall)

FReep mail for details.
If he is out touting his new book-o-crap, then it sounds like he is a good candidate for a FReeping. Oh wait, he's irrelevant anyway so why bother?
McGovern,STFU you old POS! Don't be angry because you could never be Prez. You have about as much charm as kerry the klown!
Let's hope Kerry takes all the "how to win an election" advice from McGovern he can soak up.
McGovern took a play from another book, too
"Then Herod and his soldiers ridiculed and mocked Him." -- Luke 23:11
Ah yes, the kind of philosophy that swept McGovern to victories in Massachusetts and the District of Columbia in 1972. No place else, of course, but one state out of fifty is a start.
George McGovern? That old socialist? Against Bush?
Noooooo say it ain't so! That's gonna hurt...
The Democratic strategy book, reprinted here in full: LIE!
LOL!
McGovern is a continuing example of what happens to RATS when they correctly advertise themselves as the liberals they are. That is why they simply cannot afford to appear as themselves in public. and McGovern's book on liberalism in America is where on the beseller's lists?
Uh, do they keep track of negative numbers on the bestseller's list? :-)
Look, i'll be back in 2 or three hours and...I'll...think of.........a.......dim's........issue. I will think of something....
