The Kerry Campaign's Effort To Mislead On Its Relationship To Bob Bauer

Kerry Spokeswoman Stephanie Cutter: “Bob Bauer Is Not Our Attorney And He Is Not A Chief Counsel For Any 527s.” “Before I get to the heart of the issue, I just want to correct two facts. Terry needs to get his facts right. Bob Bauer is not our attorney and he is not a chief counsel for any 527s. But this is not about 527s. This is about character assassination that’s coming right from the White House. The White House has been saying for three weeks that we are not involved in these personal attacks on John Kerry. We don't know anything about them. They’ve been trying to blur the topic to talk about 527's, campaign finance law. That’s not what this is about. This is about the President of the United States personally engaging in attack and smear politics on one of America's war heroes. He’s not just insulting John Kerry and his honorable service in Vietnam. He’s talking about everybody that served this country, their valid military service.” (Fox News’ “Fox News Live,” 8/25/04)

Kerry Senior Adviser Michael Meehan: “Neither Of Those Men Work On Our Campaign.” BLITZER: “You're not answering, Michael, the question. Is there a connection between Bob Bauer and Joe Sandler, both attorneys in Washington involved in the Democratic Party and in attack ads by these independent 527 organizations whether it's MoveOn.org or any of the other groups going after the President?” MEEHAN: “Neither of those men work on our campaign. Neither of those men were involved in a smear campaign on John Kerry and his naval record the way that Ben Ginsburg who works for the Bush campaign and is Bush's top lawyer and now we know is the top lawyer for the Swift Boat guys. There’s a reason why he resigned. He was wrong and he should resign. He shouldn't be involved in this and George Bush should step up and disavow these ads and put this matter to rest and let us get back to the issues of the day that are at hand, not some 35-year-old war looking in the rearview mirror. Let's talk about what we are going to do to put America back on track.” (CNN’s “News From CNN,” 8/25/04)

Bob Bauer Of Perkins Coie Is Legal Counsel To Both Kerry Campaign And America Coming Together (ACT).

Kerry Campaign Paid Bauer’s Law Firm, Perkins Coie, $360,244.28 For Legal Services And Other Expenses. (Federal Election Commission Records, www.fec.gov, Accessed 8/5/04)
America Coming Together (ACT) Paid Bauer’s Law Firm, Perkins Coie, $176,732 For Legal Services And Other Expenses. (Political Money Line Website, www.tray.com, Accessed 8/5/04)
News Reports Also Indicate That Bauer Represents Both Kerry Campaign And America Coming Together (ACT).

“Bob Bauer, attorney for America Coming Together, a pro-Kerry group that plans to spend millions in support of him and other Democratic candidates, said its plans do not fall under the law’s soft-money ban.” (Sharon Theimer, “Pro-Kerry Groups Argue Against New FEC Limits On ‘Soft Money’ Spending,” The Associated Press, 4/15/04)
Detroit News article refers to Bob Bauer as “national counsel to Kerry-Edwards 2004.” (George Weeks, “Hollowell Resigns To Work For Kerry Team,” The Detroit News, 8/4/04)
New York Times Reported Today Bauer Is A Kerry Lawyer: “The campaign of Senator John Kerry shares a lawyer, Robert Bauer, with America Coming Together, a liberal group that is organizing a huge multimillion-dollar get-out-the-vote drive that is far more ambitious than the Swift boat group's activities.” (Jim Rutenberg And Kate Zernike, “Veteran’s Group Had GOP Lawyer,” The New York Times, 8/25/04)

“When Sen. John Kerry Of Massachusetts Set Out To Hire A Lawyer For His 2004 Presidential Campaign, He Turned To Democratic Election Maven Robert Bauer.” (Jonathan Groner, “Many Candidates, Few Lawyers,” Legal Times, 7/28/03)

The Clinton doctrine is to accuse your opponent of exactly what it is your camp is up to, to immunize your operation from scrutiny. In thirteen years of the Clinton Bimbo Eruption Squad and their illegal and unethical tactics, nobody has learned a thing.

This is incredible. If someone were to write a novel using this stuff as material he'd be rejected because it is just not plausible.

Kerry is disintegrating over this. While he ought to be embarrassed by it, he has the press on his side and if he had just let it go, he'd be over the hump by now. But he can't let it go. He's pathological. Eventually the press is going to have to acknowledge that even they can't prevent Kerry from self-destructing.

I understand this is an interesting thread. It sounds like Wolf Blitzer actually did his job, for once with regard to the DNC's ties to MoveOn.org, etc.

http://freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1199412/posts

The press is enemy #2, right behind the jihadists. Without a complicit press, the Democrats couldn't get elected to be dog catcher.

And yes, Kerry is delusional and a serial liar.

He’s [Bush is] talking about everybody that served this country, their valid military service.”

There they go again! Blaming the Pubbies for what the Dems are doing! There has been NO statement from the Swiftvets that "everybody" did anything.

On the other hand, Kerry, in his attempt to mend bridges with the Swiftvets DID say [rough paraphrase]: when I testified about the atrocities, I wasn't talking about the Swiftvets, I was talking about the rest of the troops in country.

Now, who was slamming the vets that served their country?

I know what you mean, and agree. But Clinton was more dangerous because of his charisma -- Long John Slither doesn't have it.
