The problem is that the campaign donations are to be made from those who benefit from cheap labor - corporations & the elite classes who hire nannies, maids, gardeners. Therefore, it behooves politicians to not bite the hand that feeds them. Someone who tries to be an anti-immigration candidate faces an uphill struggle - no money and the media labels you a racist.
I ran for congress on a platform to stop illegal immigration. I did not run to stop all immigration.
The incumbent did not seek reelection.
If half the people posting their angry diatribes against illegal immigration on Free Republic would give money to candidates holding that position, those candidates might have a chance to win.
You have to get off your wallets, people. Large donors to both major parties have no incentive to stop illegal immigration. If it is to happen, it must be a grassroots uprising.
I can tell you I campaigned night and day for four months. I personally talked to more than 10,000 people. I personally distributed more than 50,000 pieces of literature. I drove 10,000 miles throughout my congressional district in my own vehicle. I gave passionate speeches for which I received considerable praise. In the end, I could not raise the money needed to buy the advertising I needed.
The candidate who won the primary was given a large amount of money for TV ads just before the election. It came from a conservative PAC in Washington DC.
Talk is cheap.
Winning elections takes money.... a hell of a lot of it.
