It's interesting that Andrew McCarthy could write such a long article about torture, yet fail to mention his own key role in the 1985 Brat Pack vehicle St. Elmo's Fire.

The MORTIFICATION of Iraqi prisoners ????
Interesting - I always knew this word to mean:
infection
freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~allencounty/info/Old_Disease.html
Death or decay of one part of a living body; gangrene or necrosis. (as stated on Dictionary.com)
www.rootsweb.com/~canon/dictionary.html
Gangrene, necrosis
www.bignell.uk.com/glossary_of_old_names.htm
Somewhere it changed meaning from it's root - MORTE or DEATH to be embarrassment ??? PC newspeak?
an instance in which you are caused to lose your prestige or self-respect; "he had to undergo one humiliation after another"

Anti-war libs who are using the prison BS as a way "to prove" the US military is just a big bad awful bully... might want to consider a new "unwritten rule" that I'm sure ALL US soldiers now go by. Islamic militant prisoners are a pain in the ass. On the battlefield, take no prisoners. Kill them. Period.

There are worse forms of torture than intentional infliction of severe physical suffering. Psychological torture can go on and on and on and on for years and years and years. Think about that kind of torture for a moment. Can you think about it for more than a minute? More than five minutes? No? Think about it going on, and on for years and years. Give up?
What would be left to you as a human being under a cruel, communist typanny (like Russkies under Stalin) where your every move was watched, your telephone was tapped, your home and computer was broken into repeatedly, your emails were blocked or censored, and everyone you saw or came into contact with was ordered not to communicate with you. Getting to you yet? Nyet? DUH !
Time to grow up and smell the coffee my friends.
God really has it in for people who torture others without mercy.

An interesting and timely article. Pardon me while I bump it for later reading.

The communists were the worst torturers of even their own people....Stalin and crew and all that came after him...KGB GRU the State Security Forces the Gulags....
And along comes their little American commie apologists to go after their 'fellow' Americans accusing them of being 'torturers'...even they must have trouble saying this with a straight face..unless they are incredibly brain washed.
They will find and exploit anyone and anything they can to tear down our country and hurt the morale of our fighting men and women...their ultimate goal is paint the military with such an evil taint...that no one finds anything left of America worth fighting for...
These nabobs are the worst America has to offer....the Kerry's of our nation....
imo

Actually, there's a much simpler solution: if you think that you're holding somebody who has information that
must be obtained
at once, and the only way to get it is to beat it out of him (or whatever) -- go ahead and do it. Then, submit yourself for judgment: if your "necessity" defense gets you an acquittal via jury nullification, fine; if not, take your lumps like a man.
That addresses the practical problem without in any way tainting the principles of Anglo-American law.

Nobody gets particulary upset at the thought of abuse in interrogation. By equating abuse with torture, though, a straw man is set up ripe for pummeling.
Abuse is not torture. That should have been the end of it.
