Diazinon Insecticides For Home, Garden To Be Phased Out
8/23/04 | BETTE HILEMAN

Posted on 08/25/2004 7:09:31 AM PDT by ZGuy

EPA has canceled registrations for dozens of residential lawn care and garden products containing the organophosphate insecticide diazinon [Fed. Reg., 69, 48864]. These products are sold under various trade names such as Dragon Diazinon Granules, Ortho Diazinon Insect Spray, and Scotts Lawn Insect Control. The move does not affect agricultural and commercial uses of diazinon.

The cancelation implements an agreement that EPA made with manufacturers in 2000 to phase out the products. The accord was reached after an EPA risk assessment concluded that diazinon poses risks to children and residential applicators.

Diazinon, one of the most popular insecticides for residential settings, has been used for more than 40 years. Before 2000, about 11 million lb of active ingredient was used each year in diazinon products.

The manufacture of residential diazinon products is now prohibited, but stores can sell existing stock until Dec. 31. In commercial agriculture, diazinon is used on fruits and vegetables.

In 2000, Syngenta announced that it would stop making diazinon. At that time, the company said it wanted to concentrate its efforts on newer products with potentially greater profit margins. A number of pyrethroids and permethrin-based insecticides can be used to substitute for diazinon, says Coby Long, insecticide brand manager at Syngenta. The only remaining producer of the active ingredient diazinon is Israel-based Makhteshim-Agan Industries.

Time to make friends with some farmers! This is the only stuff that works on some insect pests!

This is the only thing that works for us. It completely cured our basement sowbug and cricket infestation. It also works great on ants. We just sprinkle it around the base of our house.

If you smoke, everything you need to kill garden nasties is in your ashtray. Save your cigarette butts in a sealable container and add water every once in a while as it fills. When it gets full, filter the rancid water into another container and dispose of the wet butts. Then spray the nasty stuff - the nicotine in solution will kill darned near anything it touches, I promise.

They've already taken it off the market where we live, SE Wis. We had to find something else to rid ourselves of earwigs this summer. It doesn't work nearly as well, though.

Anyone know where I can find some Dursban-LO ??

The only thing dangerous about these chemical are those idiots who don't think before handling them.

Oh - I forgot - nobody is responsible for their own stupidity anymore. It is always the manufacturers fault - according tho the slime-bag lawyers like the john-john's

I don't know if it'll work on earwigs but I've used boric acid (had to buy it at the pharmacy) on carpenter ants and after multiple applications, they're gone. I applied it to the perimeter or the area they were infesting.

It took me 20 years to use up the DDT I still had around the house after they banned it in 1972 . . . and after 20 years it still worked like a charm!

Great. First Chlordane and now its replacement, Diazinon. The Ants are winning.

First they took VAPAM, then they took DURSBAN, and now DIAZINON. Prices on the remaining stock will definitely be raised. What else is there? Between the mole crickets, cinch bugs and web worms, a lawn grower doesn't stand a chance.

Next it'll be the fertilizer.

...diazinon poses risks to children...

So do collapsing houses after a carpenter ant infestation.

I didn't use diazanon one summer because my wife was pregnant and I wasn't sure about the effect on our well.

The next spring I had to have one entire corner of my house replaced and had to have the house jacked up to replace the sill because of carpenter ants. The house would have collapsed if we had had a big snowfall.

There was an ag professor somewhere who ate a tablespoon full of DDT every morning with breakfast. I don't know if he's still alive but he lived to an impressive age if he isn't.

"...diazinon poses risks to children..."

Yep. And so do ticks transmitting Lyme Disease. I live out in the country and Diazinon is the ONLY thing that will keep the evil little bastards out of the yard.

Damn! Where the hell am I supposed to keep stocking this stuff! I've already got 10lbs of R-12 (Freon), various DDT-containing products, a couple bottles of ephedra extract, and a whole bunch of other stuff that worked great and was subsequently banned.

Too bad I didn't think to stock up on free speach and religion before they were banned (got lot's of 2nd ammendment though LOL)
