Celebs aiding anti-Bush Web campaign

SAN FRANCISCO -- "Bourne Supremacy" star Matt Damon, "Lost in Translation" actress Scarlett Johansson and other celebrity artists are donating their talents - not just their cash - to an online effort to unseat President Bush.

The Internet political group MoveOn.org on Tuesday premieres 10 new anti-Bush ads created by award-winning directors and starring popular Hollywood actors. An independent group not connected directly to Democratic candidate John Kerry, MoveOn has promised an unconventional approach to the election.

"It makes a real difference when performers and visual artists can use their talent as an attraction," said Marty Kaplan, a scholar of politics and pop culture at the University of Southern California. "MoveOn's campaign is a clever way of leveraging star power to get people to pay attention to the message in the ad."

MoveOn showed its populist appeal with a "Bush in 30 Seconds" contest that generated hundreds of online anti-Bush ads, then spent millions airing the winning ad. With the latest ad campaign, it's stepping up to a new level of sophistication.

John Sayles, the writer-director of "Sunshine State" and "Eight Men Out," teams with actor Martin Sheen for one ad. Doug Liman, who directed "Swingers" and "The Bourne Identity," reunites with Damon for another MoveOn spot.

Rob Reiner, the director of "When Harry Met Sally" and "The American President," uses Bush's own words to form the core of his 30-second ad. They come from an April news conference in which Bush struggled to answer whether he'd made mistakes as president.

Despite their star wattage, some of the ads may never get airtime. While MoveOn spokeswoman Laura Dawn said the group has committed to a "sizable" national cable buy for its first ad, the rest may simply remain on the Internet as a motivator for MoveOn members.

"Whether they go on TV or not depends on how they are tested (with voters)," Dawn said.

"An independent group not connected directly to Democratic candidate John Kerry"

I love that statement!! another media bias to record. I guess they forgot this story.

In April the Kerry for President web site proudly announced:

"Zach Exley joins the [Kerry] Internet team as Director of Online Communications and Online Organizing. He was previously the director of special projects for the MoveOn.org."

Spend away, boys. I think the MoveOn folks are going to discover something they didn't want to know. The people of the US don't care about the politics of entertainers.

The obvious counter would be to use the music of 1968-72 as part of subtle reminders to people of the rampant treason that was going on at that time in some quarters. The legacy of entertainers extending themselves into politics.

Actors are children, self-absorbed and void of substance.

They're the idiots in high school nobody wanted to hang out with, the kids who talked too loudly and too often whose jokes were never funny.

An independent group not connected directly to Democratic candidate John Kerry...

Funny stuff.

This AP article reads like a press release for Moveon.org.

MoveOn.org is the same gaggle of fools who wanted to "Move on" when Clinton committed perjury. So let's get this right, we only "Move on" if a Democrat breaks the law. If they perceive the slightest malfeasance on the part of a Republican, it's "LingerAdNauseam.org"?

Soros should be locked in an isolation chamber with Abba records playing at top volume for the rest of his life for having given them money.

Regards, Ivan

I wish I had the talent, money and time to produce spoof counter ads of these guys. Would be good fun. Maybe we can come up with some good "scripts" here.

Let's see, my Ph.D., M.D., medical researcher niece is voting for Bush. My advanced degreed kids are voting for Bush. My neighbors, who are engineers are voting for Bush.

They'd better listen to these actors. After all, aren't they right just because they said so?

I truly believe these actors think they are as smart as the roles they play, someone needs to tell george clooney he could never mastermind a 175 million heist as in oceans 11 or that matt damon could never solve mathmatic equations as in good will hunting or tom cruise that he could never fly fighter jets.
These are rogues and vaga bonds that take cues from directors on what to say and how to act, and it takes them several if not many takes to get it right.
I beleive actors vote democrat because of a guilty complex from making millions without really having to work.

Sure happy to find folks with the same feelings as me. I still have memories of jane fonda bad mouthing the u.s. and its soldiers in vietnam, well.. I have changed the channel whenever I see jane for 40 years now, I wont have anything with jane fonda in my home:) My family has fought and died for this country (ww1 grandfather dead,2 ww2 grandfathers dead, 1 vietnam vet and 1 korea vet), I also served 3 years during the iran crisis era.. This country has to make un-popular decisions sometimes, the president usually has to take the hit for it as bush has.. these bush bashers need to remember the price we have to pay for our freedom. The actors really piss me off and, in my own little way I will cost them cash money because, like jane fonda, as I find out who they are I will not have their crap in my home. There is already a good sized growing list of actors which have damaged themselves irreversably with me, martin sheen ran his mouth off politically about 10 years ago and I havent given his stuff the time of day since. Rosie odonnel lol, GONE a long time ago, never liked her anyway.. anyway, ever since Kerry lost the election all the conspiracy theorists, kerry supporters and Bush bashers, all seem to be the same group.. its really hard to seperate any of them just like the terrorists mixed into the social structure in iraq, IRONIC! There should be laws with politics, just like with real-estate licenses or anything else involving professional advice or consultation. Actors should not be able to be politically active, especially where their word reaches millions of people during primetime, its wrong because millions of gullable people in the U.S. believe that actors are so smart, LOL... WAKE UP! With the acception of a few well known High i.q's like sharon stone in hollywood, their all idiots and live in a land of wonder and milk and honey.. of course there can be no war in their wonderful little world. Something like 80% of people said that if oprah winfrey endorsed something they would buy it!? WTF, talk about brainwashed.. anyway, I thank anyone who read this long one and allowing me to express my view on a subject that really pisses me off. Damn, as much as I like to watch a good movie too ...
