Livingston MD arrested on charges of impersonation and causing alarm
The Livingston doctor's picture was splashed all over the New York tabloids. He made the evening news, enthralling some members of the media with tales of being the gay lover of the central figure in the McGreevey sex scandal.
But in addition to his sex claims, police reports reviewed by The Star-Ledger yesterday show Michael David Miller has falsely told police he is a CIA operative and that the satellite dish on his house is used for CIA communication. In a series of phone calls to police and Essex County courts, the doctor has told a bizarre tale of an Iranian tenant he claimed would blow up the Essex County Courthouse in Newark.
Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura said Miller "has a serious problem with reality," and sheriff's officers, along with officers from the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, arrested the doctor last night.
Miller was taken into custody about 11:30 p.m. at his home on a warrant charging him with impersonating an FBI officer and causing false public alarm, the sheriff said.
"His behavior was so bizarre that I felt compelled, after discussing this with the prosecutor, to take this action to protect the community and Mr. Miller," Fontoura said late last night.
Miller, after what police and public officials described as repeated instances of strange behavior, found his way to the spotlight Wednesday with his claim of being the lover of Golan Cipel, the former aide of Gov. James E. McGreevey who now says the governor sexually abused him.
Clad just in purple shorts and white socks, Miller stood outside his home and told reporters he and Cipel were in love. The next day the front page of the New York Post read, "I WAS GOLAN'S GAY LOVER."

I Was Cipel's Lover
Excerpt
The Daily News headline, on Page 7, was, "I WAS CIPEL'S LOVER." The News article said Miller claimed to be taking pills to darken his skin so he could infiltrate unnamed groups.
The Star-Ledger did not run the Miller story.
After Miller's claims made headlines, Cipel, an Israeli national who has returned home, denied ever having an affair with a man.
"I am a lone person struggling against a well-oiled and monstrous machine of lies and manipulations that is working systematically to destroy me," Cipel said in a statement he gave in Israel to the Associated Press. He said he believed other lies would surface.
Police became suspicious of Miller last week when he made a series of phone calls to judges and law enforcers. In a call to the Essex County Sheriff's Office on Saturday, he said he had national security to discuss, and then claimed a former tenant was going to blow up the courthouse. Police then visited his house on Shrewsbury Lane in Livingston, which they found in disarray. In a subsequent interview, Miller said he knew of terrorist cells in New York and Washington, D.C.
Fontoura said investigators were unable to corroborate anything Miller mentioned during interviews at his home and at the courthouse.
A court appearance is scheduled for this morning in Superior Court, Newark.
The state's online doctor profiles say Miller graduated from the University De Zaragoza, Fac De Medicine, Zaragoza, Spain. He completed his residency at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston.
Robin Lally, a Saint Barnabas spokeswoman, yesterday confirmed that the doctor completed his residency there in 1984 and then had privileges at the hospital until 1997. She did not know why he left the hospital.
The Daily News in New York reported that Miller was an adjunct professor at Montclair State University, but yesterday a spokesman for the school said Miller never worked there.
Ping
Duh! I knew this when the story first broke. It sounded too much like women claiming to be a newly minted celebrity's lover.
Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura said Miller "has a serious problem with reality,"
Gee, YA THINK?
At first I thought it said, "...Cipel's love is denuded...."
Figures that
(1) The Star-Ledger would confuse the NY Post and the NY Daily News
(2) The Daily News would publish the claims of a deranged madman, without so much as checking out if he was who he said he was.
NY Daily News still flunks the headline department. The guy was not arrested for impersonating a Bureau. He was arrested for impersonainting an agent.
The media will try to keep the subject gay sex. They don't want the topic to be democrat party corruption.
Yep -- it was clear that the guy was looney tunes, yet the papers wrote about him as if he were the real deal. I guess all it took was him saying that he hated America for the media to take him seriously!
It sure would be ironic if the courthouse blew up while this guy was being arraigned!
It would be more ironic if this guy wasn't even gay.
What was that about a well oiled monster?
Did you see that kook on channel 2, he gave an interview on tv wearing only blue shorts and white socks. where is this nut an ER phsician, I have to stay out of that hospital?
He (is/was) an adjunct professor in the psychology Dept.
