I want to know why the bag wasn't accompanied by the passenger? This should not be happening still!

Suspicious Bag Found At Fort Wayne International Airport

(Fort Wayne, IN)—A hazardous materials scare at the Fort Wayne International Airport has delayed all flights out of that facility.

Emergency crews were called to the airport around 3:30 Wednesday morning, after a suspicious bag was discovered leaking an unknown substance.

Airline employees that came in contact with the bag became ill.

Airport officials believe the bag belongs to a doctor from Beirut who currently is not in Fort Wayne but may be in Chicago.

Officials with the F.B.I., and Office of Homeland Security is on the scene investigating the incident.

If you have a flight out if the airport this morning, you are urged to call the airline you are flying with.

21Alive is there and will have updates through out the morning. (Edited by Paula Hinton)

>>> Nothing on Fox News yet....they are talking about the Swiftboat Vets.

If they run it, it is a great 1-2 punch. If there is a legitimate threat here, it should mobilize folks to support the President who is viewed as being strong on terror.

I guess I should not be posting until at least two cups of tea have been consumed. Looks like Fox has been talking about it from what I see from other posts. If there is a legitimate threat here, it will help to make Kerry look like a loser once again......wasn't he the one that said that Bush has been "exaggerating" about the terror threat? Hope everyone is ok at the airport. What I'd like to know is where is the middle eastern doctor???

I think it could go either way --- if those who have been easily entering our country since 9-11 make a pre-election attack on the citizens of this country --- like they did in Spain to influence the elections, it could help Kerry. That would not be good.

Sometimes when flights are delayed or passengers take a later flight their luggage arrives at the end destination before they do. They need only get on the original flight with their luggage.

The question is why anyone at the airport would be opening the bag. A bit of larceny in the heart perhaps?

It may that the "doctor" checked his back through to his final ticketed destination but left the flight at a layover in Chicago. I realize that one might miss a connecting flight for perfectly innocent reasons, but that is an obvious tactic for someone trying to get a bomb or contraband onto a flight. When you reboard after a layover, the airline is supposed to make sure everyone with checked luggage reboards, and if someone does not show up, their luggage is removed from the plane.

Powder spill shuts Fort Wayne airport

Associated Press
August 18, 2004

FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- A white powder spilled from a bag being unloaded at the Fort Wayne Airport this morning, making at least one airport worker ill and forcing the closure of the airport.

Six people were undergoing decontamination at the airport, Fort Wayne’s WPTA TV reported.

The bag was being unloaded from an American Eagle flight from Chicago, airport spokeswoman Sandra Lux said. She said the bag belongs to a doctor from Beirut, Lebanon, who was not on the flight.

One worker became ill after coming in contact with the powder and two others complained of severe itching.

The airport terminal was shut down and all fights were delayed after the 2 a.m. incident.

Lux said that officials were attempting to contact the doctor and determine what the white powder is.
