No matter the result of tomorrow's referendum, the ''constitutional republic'' you prefer to see (as do I) simply will not emerge. Indeed, in Venezuela's case, such a republic is extremely unlikely to develop within your and my lifetime.

Chavez certainly doesn't want such a development; he's a Marxist and totalitarian through and through. However, the bulk of the opposition **appear**, from their own actions during the faux-coup a couple of years ago, to be EVERY BIT as totalitarian in their attitude, and, even more unfortunately, many of the opposition -- and, truly sorry to say this, because the group I'm about to describe includes 7 or 8 old friends, and a lady I once wanted to marry -- apparently want to restore some modified flavour of the old colonial (or neo-colonial, can't kvetch about terminology) regime.

In short, and political views aside, no matter which side ''wins'' tomorrow, it's almost a dead lock that Venezuela loses...unless, if by some accident, that one or the other side win by 15-20% in the balloting.

Not holding m'breath here.

...Not to mention that the highest court in Venezuela is packed with Chavez cronies.
