Re: Robert Sanchez's letter "Patronizing minorities" (July 27):
The notion that the Republican Party has done more for minorities is laughable at best. Mr. Sanchez's statement that more minorities have been elected to public office is a lie. You will not find a single African American Republican in the Legislature.
In fact, the "inclusive" Republican Party does not have a single black member in its ranks in the U.S. Congress. There was a period of 56 years in which Republicans did not have a single black member in Congress. Republicans have a single Hispanic member in the Texas Legislature in a state where Hispanics make up 32 percent of the population.
On the other hand, Democrats have several members in the Texas Legislature as well as Congress who are of Hispanic and African descent. In the last gubernatorial election, a Hispanic Democrat ran against a European American.
For Democrats, actions speak louder than empty words. Go on and believe your party's hollow rhetoric while the rest us play a part in shaping the future for the betterment of all people in our country.
Luis Cabrera
Does anyone know where I can find the Texas GOP minority officeholder data?
Luis left out so MUCH:
He left out --
Wallace Jefferson, on the texas Supreme Court
Victor Carillo, on the Railroad Commissioner
Henry Bonilla, US Congressman (TX-23)
...
plenty of candidates...
Try voting for Republican Hispanic candidates and see what happens.
I thought "counting" the number of minorities was not the goal of the affirmative action crowd?
Hypocrites as usual.
Here's a side by side listing of all statewide contest for the Nov. 2 election.... incumbents marked with (I)... not sure if you can decipher minorities or not other than by name, if you know who they are.

Luis es un estupido! Oh! I forgot...he is a Democrat!....Baboso!
thanks I knew there was another, forgot his name.
There are also quite a few minority appeals court justices, and local officials.
Luis Cabrera! Another evil spawn of Saul Alinskey.
Oh, the horror, the horror.
The author of this letter is a racist pig.
Let's elect politicians based on their beliefs, not their surnames. The Texas Republicans are far more diverse in the racial makeup of their politicians than the Democrats are.
Rather inaccurate. The longest the GOP went without a Black member in Congress was 32 years, from the defeat of Congressman Oscar DePriest (Chicago,IL) in 1934 until the election of Senator Ed Brooke (MA) in 1966. I might point out that from Black enfranchisement in the 1860s, no Black Democrat was elected for 70 years to Congress until Arthur Mitchell in 1934 (the man who beat DePriest) and no Black Democrat Senator was elected for 130 years until Carol Moseley-Braun in 1992. Were it not for Jim Crow laws enacted by Democrats in the late 19th century and early 20th, dozens of Black Republican members of Congress would've been seated in the South after its final member was unceremoniously dumped in 1901 (North Carolina's George White). Perhaps this gentleman should brush up on his history before mouthing off.
Thanks, deport. That's a handy list!
I've heard him speak - he's really good.
He's a man who was helped way back when (in the 1980s) by a man named George W Bush.
