Anyone catch the opening ceremonies of the Olympics tonight? Allah missed it but reader Daniel W. was watching when the Saudi Arabian team was introduced. Here's his transcript of the exchange between brain-dead telepromptress Katie Couric and Bob Costas,whose tolerance for egregious hypocrisy about "celebrating humanity" isn't quite as limitless as Katie's.
[Saudi team enters]
Couric: I love when the athletes wear their traditional clothing. This is not traditional, this is worn still in Saudi Arabia.
Costas: Since the wakeup call of 9/11, Americans have become more aware of aspects of Saudi society beyond the oil and their nominal status as a U.S. ally. Those aspects include widespread religious extremism and an antipathy towards women's rights, and here in Athens, there are 21 members of the Saudi delegation. None are women.
Couric: [Silence. For nine seconds.]
As for the rest of the team introductions, Daniel reports that the crowd greeted the Iraqi team with deafening cheers and the Jew-hating Iranians who followed them with deafening silence. Look at the Iraqi team memebers with there arms over the shoulders of the US team.

I tried not to listen to them too much. My kids repeated chatter helped block them out a bit too!
But we definately did notice the huge applause for the US, Iraq, and Afghanistan. I also noticed there wasn't much applause at all for the Iranians.

Bob Costas, from what I understand is a conservative and Bush supporter.
She was able, without hesitation, to name all the countries in the world that remain under communist rule.
I watched it last night .. Katie and Bob did a pretty good job insulting many countries

Katies not the only vacuous, mindless robot out there. If there were not many more, she wouldn't be a telepromtress in the first place.
Could that mean that someone is actually paying a little attention out there?
Great post. There must be some level of common understanding by the citizens of different countries that were it not for the support given to Al Qaeda and tramps like Al Sadr by the Iranians, a lot of people in Spain and Iraq would be alive today. (I'm not giving the Saudis a pass here, but I think the reaction to the Iranians is a powerful message by the Olympic spectators.)
