I tried to post an October 10 article from the Independent in the UK with the latest findings, but some totalitarian editor there apparently formally complained to Free Republic, and therefore no postings are permitted from the Independent. So much for the free exchange of ideas. Instead I am posting an earlier report (from the BBC website) on research into the vast unstable flank of the Cumbre Vieja volcano on the island of La Palma. The new research is at:

http://news.independent.co.uk/world/environment/story.jsp?story=549820

Please do not post from the Independent. I do not know how valid all this research is, I see every reason to set up an early warning system as recommended by Professor Bill McGuire in the new report.

Don't forget the SUCK BACK phenomenon. Before a tsunami strikes, the water level draws back like a massive outflowing tide, in just a matter of minutes. Curious onlookers have actually walked out onto suddenly dry harbor bottoms, only to be engulfed by the oncoming wall of water. If you ever see the ocean suddenly rushing out for no apparant reason, that is your signal to run as fast as possible for high ground!

At least it would slow down wild congressional deficit spending, something that seems to require an act of God. And it might rid us of about half the worst federal judges and most trial lawyers.

Gotta look for that silver lining...

Why is this being brought up again now? This was news in 2001.

The wall of water would weaken as it crossed the ocean, but would still be 40-50 metres (130-160 feet) high by the time it hit land.

Surf's up !

I saw a tv program about this hypothetical disaster. Last year sometime, maybe on Discovery channel? Fascinating show. Not sure their science is what it should be, though.

Hmm, is this the same geologist who was on that cable TV special a year or so ago, clambering around the side of a volcano, detailing how the entire western side of that island would eventually collapse? It sounded plausible, even at two am. Program was followed by the Giant Tsunami Ends the World as We Know It special. Scared me half to death. It's one thing after another. Terrorists or tsunamis or collapsing volcanoes and asteroids. Or, horror of horrors...Dorkman and Shoveit! Woman in the WH. We've had it.

A landslide could threaten the US? A wave could sweep across the country?

It's no threat. It's the right thing to do. Vote Bush! Many will.
