YANKEE PANKY! (Yankees and Red Sox in talks to merge television networks)
NY Post ^ | August 3, 2004 | TIM ARANGO

The Yankees and Red Sox are mortal enemies on the field — but they may wind up in business together by merging their lucrative sports networks, The Post has learned. The management teams at the Yankees and the Red Sox are exploring a plan to merge the YES Network and the Red Sox-owned New England Sports Network, according to sources familiar with the matter.

The deal would create a super regional sports network that would air both Yankee and Red Sox games.

Talks between the two sides are not advanced, said a source, but "there's a desire of both ownerships to do it. It would make for a powerhouse regional network."

I would have to assume that the Yankees, Red Sox, Braves and Cubs have more viewers than pretty much any other club.

This is more than Yankees and Red Sox. This is Yankees, Red Sox, New Jersey Nets, Boston Celtics, New Jersey Devils, and Boston Bruins.

So YES brings three teams that are very strong post-season contenders.

Every time I hear some whiney Red Sox fan bitch about the Yankees fan-base, they seem to forget that while Boston itself is not an enormous city, the Sox get every baseball fan north of Stamford. Yes, the NYC metro area is huge, but the Yanks share it with the Mets. If the Sox can not keep up financially, they ought to tear down that 30-seat eye-sore they call a ballpark and build something more practical.

As far as NY goes, this is Yankees-Red Sox. No one in NY watches the Nets or the Devils. Neither team is able to sell-out championship games.

I'm skeptical. Would this mean less Yankee's games being shown on YES so that they can show the Red Sox games as well? If so, I guess I'll have to fork over $140 for MLB Extra Innings again.

And the Nets are in the midst of a fire sale while the Devils are on the verge of what may be a long strike.

How many New York sports fans can get to the New Jersey Meadowlands ?

Jason Kidd is the biggest basketball star in the New York metro market. He's Eminem with a basketball.

I think the entire NHL is about to declare bankruptcy and fold. The trap killed hockey.

Plus the Phillies have a die-hard fanbase and the Orioles have a die-hard fanbase as well.

The Yankees fanbase is based more on their long history of success than on geographical location.

The Cubs and Sox are the opposite - they are the two sorriest franchises in baseball and their enormous fanbases come from geography.

Good. Then I'll be able to watch the Yankees win, as I do now, and the Red Sox lose, instead of just reading about it....

I love to watch people get all in a huff over a little boys game. The Yankees suck/Red Sox suck thing is for whiney arse crybabies who have no real life and sit their their sorry cans in front of a TV all summer long.

To thosse who engage in this practice, I say GET A LIFE!

Bad news for the Yankees. Do they really want to get involved in showbiz deals with the accursed Boston Red Sox? Have they never heard of No no, Nanette! Do they want the curse to extend to The Bronx as well!

Blasphemer!
