Within a first term as president, Kerry thinks he could attract enough international help in Iraq to make it a "reasonable" goal to replace most U.S. troops stationed there with foreign forces, he told The Los Angeles Times in an interview.

It seems somewhat appropriate that Kerry who is fluent in French and has the endorsement of Frenchmen everywhere (which happens to be anywhere there is no fighting going on), would advocate such a thing.

The Foreign Legion is a first rate force, though it was not successful in putting down the revolt in Algeria, which the conflict in Iraq is uncomfortably close to resembling.

Actualy the Foreign Legion has historicaly been one of Frances best fighting forces....I believe it has something to do with the soldiers not being French.

I believe the French Foreign Legion offers French citizenship to those who fight for 5 years.

Now, assuming we have enough sense to seal the borders and start kicking out the illegals already here, it's a great idea to get someone their citizenship. Plus, it would force them to learn English and develop at least some kind of marketable skill for when they're done in the program. 5 years seems about right.

i read its a 7 years commitment, they give you french citizenship, a new identity (if wanted) and a pardon of all crimes with a guarentee of no extradition.

Yeah... kerry can attract, and replace American Soldiers with the same number of french soldiers as was on the beach at Normandy!!!

I aboslutely do not favor a US foreign legion. We have no problem recruiting for our armed forces. There are foreingers who join our armed forces now, but they are integrated into regular outfits with US citizens. Do you think the French Foreign Legion only exists to prevent French boys from dying fighting for France? They exist also so that they can used to put down domestic riots. Foreign soldiers aren't likely to question orders to shoot Frenchmen. I do not want an outfit like that in the US.

In its heyday, the French Foreign Legion was mainly comprised of German expatriates who had just been beaten by the allies in WWII. It is still a first rate force (one of the few, if only France has) but its glory days are long since past.

As far as an American Foreign Legion, well that is just plain stupid. We currently have green card holders in the service, fighting for us, and their citizenship in our great land. A copy of the French Foreign Legion could do no more, nor less that what the U.S. Military already does.

Kerry has apparently ripped off Mark K. Roberts. Roberts already wrote a series of action books about a American Foreign Legion called "The Liberty Corps".
