House Speaker Wonders, Was Berger Covering Up?

(CNSNews.com) - Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) says the House Government Reform Committee will investigate "the wayward actions" of former National Security Adviser Sandy Berger.

"The American people deserve to know why Mr. Berger apparently skirted the law and removed highly classified terrorism documents, purportedly in his pants, from a secure reading room at the National Archives and then proceeded to lose or destroy some of them," Hastert said in a statement.

"How could President Clinton's former National Security Advisor be so cavalier?" Hastert asked. The Republican leader had other questions as well:

-- Was Mr. Berger trying to cover up key facts regarding intelligence failures during his watch?

-- What happened to those missing documents?

-- Whose hands did they fall into?

-- What kind of security risk does that pose to Americans today?

"I know Chairman Tom Davis (R-Va.) will work to get the full truth of what really happened and help all of us better understand why Sandy Berger, a person who should fully understand the gravity and importance of sensitive national security materials, would operate with such overt negligence and apparent disregard for the law."

While Republicans concentrate on an apparent national security breach, Democrats are concentrating on the timing of the leak about Berger.

Democratic National Committee chairman Terry McAuliffe reportedly has filed a request under the Freedom of Information Act, hoping to get a look at correspondence between the Justice Department and the White House regarding the Berger investigation.

McAuliffe is among the Democrats who view the leak about Berger as a political ploy to deflect attention from alleged security lapses by the Bush administration.

Davis will do his job slow-rolling, whitewashing and completely ignoring motive. His future career depends on it.

Need to take the gloves off a little here. He broke the law, he didn't skirt it.

Democrats are concentrating on the timing of the leak about Berger.

What? Berger did the deed and got caught by the Archives itself. If anything it's nothing to do with the Republicans but with Shrillary. She promised several months ago Oct would be big but this going public a couple months early still brings down Kerry. Berger hired an attorney way back in January so Kerry knew about this and still kept him on.

Dear Speaker of the House:

What really happened is that the Congress of these United States was, and is derelict in it's duties.

The spectacle that was, and remains, the Clinton administration taught us that the "rule of law" needn't be followed.

Now, if you don't mind, please take the plastic bag off my head?

I'm suffocating.

VA RINO. His conservatism extends as far as banning partial birth abortions, but he mostly peddles pork and tries to insert himself into newsmaking issues.

Don't bet on it! If it's been known since October, yet revealed just now, Our Republican reps have chosen to use it politically rather than criminally. I would contend "the full truth" is already well known and we will NOT see the desired perp walk any time soon.

The question almost answers itself. Impeached President Clinton picked Berger and Impeached President Clinton has extremely poor judgment.

That about sums up the difference between Republicans and Democrats...

There we go. Okay, all you Freepers cheering and grinning over the past couple of days, the BS begins.

NOTHING will happen over this. The GOP has put a RINO in charge of the House investigation. Berger will walk, the Clintons will be charged with nothing, justice will not be done.

Cynical? Yep.

I think everytime Kerry goes on vacation, we can look at it as a botox upgrade AND A THINK TANK because there is something like the Berger thing about to hit the fan. Everyone has to get their story straight.

Clinton knew, Berger knew, Kerry didn't have a clue?? Terry files a FOI??

Give me a break. They thought it would be dealt with internally "as an accident". Ooops...never try to write your own ending!!

I still think that Hillary didn't want to speak because they KNEW it was coming and she didn't want to be around. I think she'll still cop out but I also think that because of her Hubby, this issue will follow her to her demise. Thanks Bubba!!

Hastert has punted. Davis is my critter and his bread is buttered by far too many democrats in the Arlington/Alexandria communist zone. Maybe the Senate can get a real committee to do the job.

The Senate will appoint another VA RINO, Warner.

Tom Davis is a key GOP RINO, though the "R" behind his name might as well stand for "Reptile". He represents the 11th C. D. (much of Fairfax County, VA).

That difference is purely rhetorical. When it comes down to investigating, they will all punt.
