I have been wondering, if security was so strict,
why was he allowed to leave with the documents
in the first place?

That may be a stupid question, or a question that
has been asked and answered, but I haven't been
able to follow the threads.

It's pretty simple. When you're the number 1 guy in National Security, he can do pretty much whatever he wants (not that it's right).

Clintonistas were notorious for disregarding security.

Many of their WH staff were given overrides due to issues in their security check. (drugs etc) Rumors of pot smoking during thos eight years too. only rumors though.

Hitlary was notoriously rude to military or security people. (just do not tell her good morning or smile at her)

He may very well have been challenged but he could have said to the clerk/security to go [explitive deleted] themselves "I am sandy berger, i work for your next boss."
